Gorgonians

How to choose a gorgonian coral

Choose a gorgonian by its exact care requirements rather than color alone. These branching octocorals include both photosynthetic species that obtain much of their energy from light and non-photosynthetic species that depend on frequent feeding. Review the individual listing for care level, expected size, feeding needs, and whether the specimen is suitable for your aquarium experience.

Healthy specimens should have intact tissue, a firm holdfast, and polyps that open when conditions are appropriate. Plan the final position before purchase so the colony has room to grow without rubbing against rockwork or neighboring corals.

Photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic gorgonians

Photosynthetic gorgonians are generally the more approachable choice for established reef aquariums. They need appropriate reef lighting, stable water chemistry, and enough water movement to keep their branches clean. Their exact light and flow preferences still vary by species, so acclimate gradually and follow the product-specific guidance.

Non-photosynthetic gorgonians do not receive meaningful energy from reef lighting. They require regular access to appropriately sized planktonic foods and strong nutrient-export practices to balance that feeding. Because missed feedings and declining water quality can quickly affect them, non-photosynthetic selections are best suited to experienced aquarists with a deliberate feeding plan.

Lighting, flow, and placement

Use broad, indirect, variable flow that moves the polyps and prevents detritus from settling without blasting tissue continuously from one direction. A gorgonian that remains closed, accumulates algae, or develops bare areas may need its placement, flow, lighting, or overall water quality reassessed.

Secure the base to stable rockwork unless the individual listing specifies a different placement. Leave clearance around the full branch structure and account for future growth. Keep the colony away from aggressive corals with long sweeper tentacles, and avoid locations where branches repeatedly contact hard surfaces.

Feeding and long-term care

Feed according to the species and polyp size. Photosynthetic gorgonians may benefit from supplemental suspended foods, while non-photosynthetic species require consistent feeding as a core part of their care. Turn down mechanical filtration briefly when appropriate, observe whether polyps capture food, and restore filtration before excess food degrades water quality.

Stable salinity and temperature, good oxygenation, and consistent nutrient management matter more than chasing a single universal parameter range. Inspect the branches regularly for algae, tissue recession, pests, and trapped debris, and make changes gradually rather than reacting with abrupt swings in lighting, flow, or chemistry.
