IceCap FAQs

What is the difference between IceCap K1 and K3 protein skimmers?

Both lines are compact, space-saving skimmers designed to come apart for cleaning. The K1 line runs from the K1-Nano, for aquariums up to 30 gallons, to the K1-200, rated for 150–300 gallons. The K3 line uses controllable DCAIR pinwheel pumps and comes in in-sump INT and OVP models and hang-on-back HOB models, up to the K3-200 OVP, rated for aquariums up to 400 gallons. Choose a K3 if you want to dial in the pump’s output, and either line if you need dependable skimming in a tight space.

What size IceCap skimmer do I need?

Size by your real bioload, not just tank volume. IceCap lists heavy, medium, and light bioload ratings for its skimmers; the K3-160 INT, for example, is rated for 125 gallons with a heavy bioload, 175 medium, and 250 light. Those ratings exclude sump volume, so for a heavily stocked or heavily fed reef, choose a skimmer whose heavy rating matches your display.

What does the IceCap Battery Backup do?

The Battery Backup v3 switches on the moment the power goes out and keeps one or two flow pumps running for hours, so your tank keeps circulating and exchanging gas until power returns. It works with most 12–24V pumps from brands like Maxspect, IceCap, and Reef Octopus, and two backups can be connected to double the run time for a single pump. It is built for DC flow pumps, not heaters, lights, or other AC equipment.

Are IceCap Gyre pumps compatible with HYDROS controllers?

Yes. The IceCap 2K and 4K Gyre flow pumps are direct-drive compatible with the HYDROS WaveEngine and WaveEngine LE, and we carry them with a WaveEngine LE, with IceCap’s own controller, or as a pump only. The IceCap controller has five flow modes (constant, stream, random, pulsing, and cycle), a 20-minute feed mode, and a night mode that drops to the lowest flow when it senses low light.

What changed with the IceCap Reef Sump V2?

The V2 sumps remove the built-in freshwater reservoir and add new drains and a built-in heater holder. They keep the spill-over filter sock compartment with lids for quiet operation, adjustable baffles, a triple probe holder, and room for a skimmer, heaters, a return pump, and reactors. V2 sumps come in 30-, 36-, 39-, and 48-inch sizes. Without the built-in reservoir, plan on a separate top-off container such as the IceCap ATO Reservoir.

IceCap aquarium equipment: skimmers, flow, filtration, and backup power

IceCap has supported reef keepers for decades, and its lineup now covers most of the equipment a saltwater system needs: protein skimmers, gyre and propeller flow pumps, reef sumps, UV sterilizers, reactors, auto top-off, battery backup, and all-in-one aquariums. The gear is designed for compact, practical installs, and several products work directly with HYDROS controllers. Here is how the main lines fit together.

IceCap protein skimmers

IceCap skimmers come in two families. K1 skimmers are compact models sized from the K1-Nano for tanks up to 30 gallons to the K1-200 for 150–300 gallons. K3 skimmers add a controllable DCAIR pinwheel pump and come in in-sump INT and OVP versions and hang-on-back HOB versions, with the K3-200 OVP rated for aquariums up to 400 gallons. IceCap also makes skimmers sized for the rear chambers of all-in-one tanks. Compare every brand in protein skimmers.

Gyre and flow pumps

The IceCap 2K and 4K Gyre pumps use officially licensed Maxspect gyre technology to push a wide, even sheet of flow that virtually eliminates dead spots, and they can be mounted vertically or horizontally close to the water surface. They are available with IceCap’s controller, with a HYDROS WaveEngine LE, or as a pump only. For targeted propeller-style flow, the FP-60, FP-100, and FP-200 flow pumps deliver up to 790, 1,585, and 4,755 gallons per hour. Compare more options in powerheads and Maxspect.

Reef sumps, UV sterilizers, and reactors

  • Reef Sump V2: acrylic sumps in 30-, 36-, 39-, and 48-inch sizes with a spill-over filter sock compartment, adjustable baffles, a triple probe holder, and built-in heater holders. See more in aquarium sumps.
  • UV sterilizers: High Output inline and in-sump UV sterilizers that kill free-floating parasites, algae, and bacteria as water passes through, without affecting the beneficial bacteria in your rock and media. Replacement bulbs and quartz sleeves are available. Compare more in UV sterilizers.
  • Reactors and CO2 scrubber: internal, external, and 12V DC media reactors for carbon or GFO, a magnetic kalkwasser mixing reactor, and a CO2 scrubber with color-changing absorbent media that helps raise pH. Browse more in reactors.

Auto top-off and backup power

The ATO EZ is a plug-and-play top-off system with three optical sensors: two control the refill pump, and a third safety sensor shuts it down to prevent overflows. Pair it with the enclosed IceCap ATO Reservoir, which has quick-connect fittings for an ATO, kalkwasser dosing, or a HYDROS Maven. The Battery Backup v3 starts instantly when power fails and keeps one or two 12–24V flow pumps running for hours. See every option in auto top-off.

IceCap all-in-one aquariums

IceCap’s 10 and 20 gallon cube AIO aquariums have their filtration built into rear chambers. The 20 gallon is a rimless, low-iron glass cube measuring 18" × 18" × 16", with a return pump of about 265 GPH and a 200 micron filter sock included. Matching stands are sold separately. Accessories and filter media

Round out a build with IceCap titanium heater elements and a heater controller, isolation boxes, magnetic frag racks, frag transport containers, carbon fiber tweezers, a clip-on photo lens kit for coral photos, and filter media including Bio-Spheres, Bio-Cylinders, and cut-to-fit carbon and nitrate/phosphate pads. Find more in filter media, frag racks, and heaters, chillers, and thermometers.
