Goniopora Coral FAQ

Are Goniopora corals hard to keep?
Goniopora are moderate-care LPS corals that are best suited to reef keepers who can maintain stable water chemistry. Modern aquacultured varieties are often more adaptable than Goniopora historically available in the hobby, but they still need consistent salinity, alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, nutrients, light, and flow. Fully extending flower-like polyps are a useful sign that conditions are comfortable.
Do Goniopora need high light?
Goniopora generally prefer moderate rather than extremely high light. A PAR range around 75–150 is a practical starting point for many varieties. Begin at the lower end after shipping or when changing lights, then increase intensity gradually over two to three weeks while watching polyp extension and coloration.
Where should Goniopora be placed, and how much flow do they need?
Place Goniopora securely on rockwork or a stable ledge where it receives low to moderate, indirect flow. The polyps should sway gently without being pinned down or whipped by a direct current. Allow room for full extension and keep debris from settling around the colony.
What do Goniopora corals eat?
Goniopora receive energy from light but can benefit from supplemental nutrition. Offer fine-particle coral foods, appropriately sized planktonic foods, or very small portions of mysis or finely chopped seafood. Target feed lightly, reduce flow for about 10–15 minutes, and avoid overfeeding so nutrients remain stable.
Why is my Goniopora not opening?
A Goniopora may stay closed while acclimating after shipping, but prolonged retraction can point to excessive flow or light, unstable parameters, debris, irritation from a neighbor, or pests. Check temperature and salinity first, then review alkalinity, calcium, nutrients, placement, and visible tissue condition. Change one factor at a time so you can identify what improves its response.
