How to choose aquarium lighting
Choose aquarium lighting by matching the fixture to the tank’s dimensions, livestock, and long-term goals. A fish-only aquarium mainly needs even viewing light and a dependable schedule. A reef aquarium also needs sufficient photosynthetically active radiation at the depth where corals will live. Tank length, width, depth, center braces, rockwork, and mounting height all affect how many fixtures are required and how evenly the light reaches the aquascape.
Start with coverage before chasing maximum output. One powerful point-source light can create bright peaks and deep shadows, while multiple fixtures or a wider panel may produce more usable light across a broad reef. Check the manufacturer’s recommended spread, but treat it as a starting point because aquascape height and desired coral placement can change the result.
PAR, spectrum, and coral needs
PAR measures the quantity of light in the wavelengths used for photosynthesis, while spectrum describes how that energy is distributed across colors. Both matter. Blue and violet wavelengths are central to modern reef lighting, but a balanced spectrum can improve visual rendering and support a natural appearance. The best settings are not always the bluest or brightest available; they are settings that meet coral needs consistently without creating avoidable stress.
Different corals tolerate different light ranges. Soft corals and many LPS corals often thrive at lower to moderate intensity, while many SPS corals are kept under stronger light. Species, acclimation history, water clarity, and colony position all influence the useful target. A PAR meter helps confirm actual intensity at the coral rather than relying on fixture percentage, which cannot be compared directly between brands or mounting heights.
LED reef lights and fixture formats
LED aquarium lights are popular because they combine controllable spectrum, dimming, scheduling, and efficient output in compact fixtures. Point-source pendants can create shimmer and focused intensity. Bars can fill shadows, extend coverage, or supplement a primary fixture. Larger panels spread light across a wider area and may reduce hot spots. Hybrid layouts use more than one format to balance shimmer, color blending, and coverage.
Also account for mounting hardware, power supplies, cable routing, and app or controller requirements. A fixture that fits the aquarium but cannot be mounted securely at the recommended height is not a complete solution. Review available arms, rails, hanging kits, diffusers, and shades before purchase, especially when the aquarium sits close to a wall or beneath a canopy.
Sizing and arranging lights over the aquarium
Use the illuminated footprint rather than fixture wattage alone when sizing a system. Long aquariums may need several modules to avoid dark ends, while front-to-back depth can require a second row or wider optic. Deep tanks demand more output at the bottom, but increasing intensity does not solve every coverage problem. Adjust fixture count, spacing, mounting height, and aquascape placement together.
Mounting higher generally widens spread and improves blending, but it can reduce intensity and allow more light into the room. Mounting lower can concentrate output and increase hot spots. Begin near the manufacturer’s suggested range, measure or observe coverage, and make small changes. Keep salt spray and condensation away from lenses and ventilation openings so the fixture can cool properly.
Programming and light acclimation
A stable daily schedule is more important than frequent program changes. Many reef aquariums use a gradual ramp, a consistent peak period, and a ramp down. Extremely long photoperiods do not replace appropriate intensity and can encourage algae or extend coral stress. Choose a schedule you can maintain, then judge changes over weeks rather than altering spectrum every few days.
When installing a stronger fixture or moving coral upward, use an acclimation mode or reduce initial intensity. Increase output gradually while watching polyp extension, color, and tissue condition. Light shock can occur even when the final setting would be suitable for an acclimated coral. Move either the coral or the intensity in small steps instead of changing both at once.
Cleaning and maintaining aquarium lights
Salt creep, dust, and mineral film can reduce output and trap heat. Disconnect power before cleaning, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and wipe lenses and housings with materials that will not scratch coatings. Keep fans and vents clear, inspect mounts for corrosion or looseness, and form drip loops in power cords. Never spray cleaner directly onto a fixture above the aquarium.
Recheck coverage after major aquascape changes or when colonies grow large enough to shade neighbors. Lighting needs can evolve even when the fixture has not changed. Regular cleaning, a repeatable schedule, and occasional PAR measurements provide more value than constant adjustments and help keep coral response easier to interpret.
