How aquarium filtration works
Aquarium filtration combines biological, mechanical, and chemical processes. Biological filtration gives beneficial bacteria surface area to convert ammonia and nitrite into less toxic nitrate. Mechanical filtration captures suspended debris before it breaks down. Chemical media targets selected dissolved compounds. A stable saltwater aquarium normally uses more than one method, with water movement carrying waste to the equipment that can remove it.
The best aquarium filter is not simply the model with the highest flow rating. Match filtration to aquarium volume, livestock, feeding, plumbing, available space, and maintenance habits. Equipment that is difficult to reach or clean is likely to be serviced less often, allowing trapped material to become a nutrient source. Build a system whose filter socks, fleece, skimmer cup, media, and pumps can be accessed without dismantling the aquarium.
Sumps, canister filters, and all-in-one chambers
A sump provides space below the display for mechanical filtration, protein skimming, heaters, probes, return pumps, media, and refugium equipment. It also increases water volume and keeps much of the life-support equipment out of sight. Sumps require an overflow, properly sized plumbing, and enough empty capacity to hold drain-down water when the return pump stops.
Canister filters contain media in a sealed external body and can provide strong mechanical and chemical filtration when cleaned regularly. They suit aquariums without a sump, but trapped debris can accumulate if service is delayed. All-in-one rear chambers use compact baskets, socks, fleece, skimmers, and return pumps behind the display. Their limited space rewards careful equipment sizing and an organized maintenance schedule.
Filter socks, roller mats, and mechanical filtration
Filter socks and pads trap particles as water enters the filtration system. Replace or wash them before the captured waste decomposes. A finer micron rating catches smaller particles but can clog faster, while a coarser material may maintain flow longer. Keep enough clean replacements available so maintenance does not depend on reusing a dirty filter.
Roller mats and fleece filters advance clean material automatically as the exposed section becomes clogged. They can reduce routine sock changes and export waste before it breaks down, but the unit must fit the sump, match the expected flow, and leave room for roll replacement. Mechanical filtration improves clarity; it does not replace biological filtration, nutrient management, or water changes.
Protein skimmers, UV sterilizers, and filter media
Protein skimmers remove dissolved and fine organic material by concentrating it into foam before it becomes nitrate and phosphate. Size a skimmer around the system and realistic bioload, then tune water depth and air intake according to its instructions. A larger rating does not guarantee better performance if the skimmer cannot maintain a stable foam head in the installation.
UV sterilizers expose passing water to ultraviolet energy and can reduce free-floating algae, bacteria, and some parasite stages when flow and dose are appropriate. Carbon, phosphate media, resins, and biological media serve different jobs and should be selected from measured needs. Chemical filtration is most useful when the target compound and replacement schedule are understood.
Sizing and maintaining a reef filtration system
Use equipment flow charts and plumbing calculations instead of relying on maximum gallons-per-hour labels. Return flow decreases with vertical lift, elbows, valves, and restrictions. The filtration turnover rate does not need to provide all in-tank circulation; powerheads can create reef flow while the return pump moves water through the sump at a manageable rate.
Set a repeatable maintenance schedule for socks or fleece, skimmer cleaning, media replacement, pump inspection, and detritus removal. Watch for declining flow, rising noise, overflowing chambers, channeling media, and bypass around clogged material. Testing nitrate, phosphate, and other relevant parameters shows whether the filtration system and husbandry are keeping pace with feeding and livestock growth.
