Why did my bright metallic green centers fade to dull green or brown?
This coral’s color shifts with spectrum and nutrient balance. Excess white light and high phosphate can deepen zooxanthellae, muting fluorescence. Increase blue/UV channels, keep NO3 ~5–15 ppm and PO4 ~0.03–0.1 ppm, and avoid rapid swings in alkalinity. Strong, randomized flow helps keep the mat clean so tissue reflects light better. Expect gradual recovery over 1–3 weeks.
How do I prevent Pachyclavularia violacea from overrunning my aquascape?
Mount it on an isolated “island” rock surrounded by sand. Trim the purple mat weekly at the edge with a razor and siphon fragments. If it creeps where you don’t want it, gently peel the mat; spot-treat any leftovers with a tiny dab of kalk paste. Avoid placing it on main rockwork or touching glass/overflows.
My colony has been closed for days—what should I check beyond basics?
Inspect for algae/cyano film on the mat; blast with a baster and increase flow. Look for vermetid snail threads or detritus lodged at the base—both irritate polyps. Verify stable alkalinity (7.5–9.5 dKH) and recent dips that may delay opening. If newly added, reduce intensity 20–30% and ramp up over 1–2 weeks. Most reopen once irritation is removed.
Is it aggressive, and how does it handle neighbors?
It rarely uses stings; its threat is smothering by overgrowth. It can crawl over zoanthids, mushrooms, and even up glass. Conversely, many LPS and some euphyllids can burn it, leaving bare patches that algae colonize. Provide space, prune routinely, and run fresh carbon if mixing with soft corals to reduce chemical stress.
