Dive Deeper: Info & Tips for Tang Fish

Tangs belong to the surgeonfish family and are best kept in aquariums over 75 gallons, depending on species. They thrive in environments with high oxygen levels, strong flow, and open swimming areas. While many tangs are peaceful, some can be territorial—especially toward other tangs with similar body shapes or colors.

They are herbivores by nature and should be fed a varied diet rich in marine-based seaweed and algae. Supplementing with pellets and frozen foods helps maintain bright coloration and immune health. Tangs are also prone to external parasites like ich, so quarantine and UV sterilizers are commonly recommended.

Top Saltwater Tangs

Blue Hippo Tang – Vibrant blue with black patterning and a yellow tail. Active and popular, best kept in tanks 100 gallons and up.

Yellow Tang – Bright yellow and hardy, this tang is an excellent grazer and perfect for mid-sized reef systems.

Kole Tang – A bristletooth species with a spotted body. Great for controlling film algae on rocks and glass.

Tomini Tang – A smaller tang option that does well in tanks starting at 70 gallons. Peaceful and algae-focused.

Powder Blue Tang – Striking in appearance but more sensitive to stress. Requires pristine water and plenty of swimming room.

Ideal Parameter Range

  • Salinity: 1.023–1.026
  • Temperature: 75–80°F
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: <20 ppm
  • Calcium: 400–450 ppm
  • Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Setting Up an Aquarium for Tangs

A successful tang tank includes large open areas for swimming and mature live rock for grazing. Use strong circulation pumps and maintain stable parameters to support their active lifestyles. Avoid sharp edges and unsecured décor, as tangs are fast swimmers and can injure themselves if startled.

Tangs should not be added to small or immature tanks, as they produce more waste and require space to reduce aggression. Introducing them last in the stocking order helps prevent territorial disputes.

Feeding Tang Fish

Tangs are natural algae grazers and should be offered daily feedings of nori, seaweed sheets, and algae-based pellets. Supplement their diet with frozen herbivore blends and meaty foods like mysis shrimp for a balance between protein and fiber.

Feeding multiple times per day helps mimic their natural grazing habits and keeps their digestive systems healthy. A clip or veggie magnet can keep nori in place while they feed.
