Dive Deeper: Choosing a Sicce Pump
Sicce pumps are sorted by what they are for, and the model names tell you less than the series does. Get the series right first.
Syncra Silent — Return Pumps
The workhorse line, running from the Syncra Silent 0.5 at roughly 185 GPH to the Syncra Silent 5.0 at roughly 1,321 GPH. AC-driven, genuinely quiet in a sump, and rebuild-able with readily available impeller kits. If you want a return pump you install and forget, this is it.
Sizing rule: target 5–10× total system volume per hour at the actual head height, not the pump's rated maximum. A pump rated 1,000 GPH pushing five feet of head and two elbows delivers closer to 600.
Syncra ADV — Higher Head Pressure
The ADV series (5.5, 7.0, 9.0, 10.0) delivers more head pressure for tall stands, long return runs, or feeding a manifold that also drives a reactor and a UV steriliser.
Syncra SDC — Controllable DC Pumps
The SDC line (3.0, 6.0, 7.0, 9.0) adds WiFi control and variable speed, so you can dial return flow precisely, set a feed mode, and ramp rather than hard-starting. This is the line to buy if you want to tune flow after the build is done.
XStream — Wave Pumps
XStream 3500 through 8000, roughly 925 to 2,120 GPH, for in-tank circulation. Broad flow pattern rather than a jet, which is what most rockwork actually wants.
ULTRA and ULTRA-ZERO — Utility Pumps
Water changes, mixing salt, draining and transferring. The ULTRA-ZERO runs down to a very low water level, which is what makes it useful for emptying a mixing barrel or a sump.
Shark PRO Internal Filters
Shark PRO 700 and 900 internal filters for quarantine tanks, hospital tanks, frag systems and freshwater setups — mechanical and biological filtration in a single submersible unit with no plumbing.
Maintenance
Sicce pumps are among the easiest in the hobby to service. Pull the impeller every three to six months, soak it in a 1:3 vinegar solution to strip calcium, and check the ceramic shaft for wear. A pump that has started buzzing almost always needs an impeller, not a replacement.
