Saltwater Aquarium Equipment: How to Build a Complete Reef System
Marine aquarium supplies come down to a handful of jobs: hold the water, move it, filter it, light it, heat it, and keep its chemistry stable. Get those right and everything else is refinement. This guide covers each category in the order most reefers buy it, with the sizing rules and target numbers we use on our own systems, plus links to the collections where each type of equipment lives.
The essential saltwater aquarium supplies checklist
A complete saltwater or reef setup almost always includes the following:
- Aquarium and stand. Sized for the livestock you want, with working room underneath for a sump.
- Heater and thermometer. Roughly 2.5–5 watts per gallon, holding a steady 76–80°F.
- Circulation. A return pump plus powerheads, sized to the turnover targets below.
- Filtration. Mechanical, biological, and chemical media, and usually a protein skimmer.
- Lighting. Spectrum and intensity matched to soft corals, LPS, or SPS.
- Salt and source water. Marine salt mixed with RO/DI water to 1.025–1.026 specific gravity, about 35 ppt.
- Test kits. Alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, nitrate, and phosphate at a minimum.
- Rock, sand, food, and cleaning tools. The parts that finish the build and keep it running week to week.
Aquariums: size the system before buying anything else

Tanks under about 20 gallons swing faster in temperature and salinity, which makes small mistakes expensive; the 40 to 90 gallon range tends to be the most forgiving without dominating a room. A reef-ready tank plumbed to a sump adds roughly 20–30% more water volume and moves heaters, skimmers, and media out of the display, while an all-in-one keeps the footprint small.
Reef aquarium lighting and realistic PAR targets
Match light to livestock rather than to tank dimensions. As a working guide, soft corals do well around 50–100 PAR, LPS around 100–200, and SPS around 200–400 near the top of the rock. Run an 8–10 hour photoperiod with ramp-up and ramp-down, and check coverage rather than peak output: a fixture that reads well under center and drops off at the ends usually needs a second unit or a higher mount.
Pumps, powerheads, and the flow numbers that matter
Aquarium pumps and powerheads do different jobs. Size a return pump for about 5–10 times display volume per hour after head loss from height, elbows, and valves, not the number printed on the box. Then add in-tank flow until total turnover reaches roughly 10–20x for a mixed reef or 30–40x for an SPS-dominant system. Controllable DC pumps from brands like Sicce, IceCap, and EcoTech Marine let you vary output so flow stays broad and changing, which keeps detritus suspended without blasting tissue or scouring the sand bed.
Filtration and protein skimmers
Good filtration removes waste before it breaks down into nitrate and phosphate. Pick a skimmer for roughly twice your system’s actual water volume, then adjust as stocking grows. Change filter socks every two to three days, or run a roller mat if you would rather not. Start RO/DI water at 0 TDS so you are not importing the nutrients you just spent money removing.
Controllers, heaters, and temperature stability
Stability matters more than any single number. Hold temperature within about two degrees, typically 76–80°F, and build in a failsafe so one stuck heater cannot cook the tank. Aquarium controllers from Neptune Systems and Hydros monitor temperature, pH, and water level, switch outlets, run dosing and top-off, and send alerts when something drifts. Automation should make good husbandry easier to repeat, not replace it, so start with temperature, level, and leak detection before adding dosing and probes.
Salt, testing, and reef chemistry targets

- Salinity: 1.025–1.026 specific gravity (about 35 ppt)

- Nitrate: 2–10 ppm
- Phosphate: 0.03–0.10 ppm
Test before dosing, change one variable at a time, and move slowly. Stable numbers slightly outside the ideal range beat perfect numbers that swing every week.
Food and the maintenance routine
Most tank problems trace back to a skipped routine rather than missing equipment. Feed what the animals finish in a couple of minutes, change 10–20% of the water every one to two weeks, empty the skimmer cup weekly, and soak pumps and powerheads in a diluted vinegar or citric acid bath every two to four weeks. Keep spare reagents, media, and tubing on hand so maintenance never waits on a shipment.
Live rock, dry rock, and aquarium sand
Rock and substrate drive biological filtration and set the aquascape. Our live rock and aquarium sand collection covers live and dry options plus reef sand. Plan on roughly half a pound to a pound of rock per gallon, though open aquascapes with flow-through structures often use less and look better. Choose a shallow bed near an inch or commit to four inches or more; the depth in between traps detritus without the benefits. Expect two to six weeks of cycling before ammonia and nitrite hold at zero.
Budgeting a build and upgrading over time
Cost tracks system size more than brand. A complete 10–20 gallon nano typically lands around $600–$1,200 once light, flow, heat, salt, and testing are included. A 40–75 gallon mixed reef with a sump and skimmer usually runs $2,000–$4,000, and 100 gallon-plus builds with controllers and dosing often pass $5,000 before livestock. Fund life support first, then upgrade lighting and automation as the tank matures, and leave room for the recurring costs of salt, RO/DI filters, reagents, and food.
