Aquarium Heater Size Calculator

Aquarium Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate aquarium volume?

Measure the length, width and height of the water area in inches, multiply them together, then divide by 231 to get US gallons, because there are 231 cubic inches in a gallon. For a rectangular tank that is Gallons = (L x W x H) / 231. Round tanks use the cylinder formula. Our aquarium volume calculator does this automatically for a dozen tank shapes.

How much substrate do I need for my aquarium?

Multiply your tank footprint (length x width in inches) by your desired bed depth in inches to get cubic inches, divide by 1,728 to get cubic feet, then multiply by the substrate density (roughly 85 to 100 lb per cubic foot for sand). A good starting depth is about 1 inch for a bare look or 3 to 4 inches for a deep sand bed. The substrate calculator handles this for sand, gravel and aragonite.

How many watts should my aquarium heater be?

Plan on about 3 to 5 watts per gallon, using the higher end if your room runs cold or your target temperature is well above room temperature. A 40 gallon tank in a normal room typically needs around 150 to 200 watts, and splitting that across two smaller heaters adds a safety margin. The heater size calculator refines this using your actual temperature difference.

How much does a filled aquarium weigh?

Water alone weighs about 8.34 pounds per gallon, so a 55 gallon tank holds roughly 460 pounds of water before you add glass, rock and sand. Total filled weight is usually higher than people expect, so always confirm your floor and stand can handle it. The aquarium weight calculator adds water, tank and substrate together.

How much salt do I need to mix saltwater?

It takes roughly a half cup of reef salt per gallon to reach a typical reef salinity near 1.026 specific gravity (about 35 ppt), but exact amounts vary by brand. Always mix to a target salinity measured with a refractometer rather than trusting a fixed scoop. The saltwater mix calculator gives you a precise starting amount for your volume.

What is the most important parameter to keep stable in a reef tank?

Alkalinity. Corals are far more sensitive to swings in alkalinity than to a slightly high or low steady value, so pick a target between about 8 and 9 dKH and hold it.
