How to choose an anemone for a saltwater aquarium
Choose an anemone by matching the animal’s adult size, lighting needs, movement, and hosting behavior to a mature aquarium. Bubble Tip Anemones are a common starting point because captive-propagated specimens are widely kept and can host several clownfish species. Rock Flower Anemones usually stay lower in the aquarium, display bold color, and do not depend on a clownfish relationship. Carpet and other large anemones need considerably more open space and should be selected only after checking their species-specific care and compatibility.
Start with the aquarium rather than color alone. Anemones can move until they find a combination of light, flow, and footing they prefer, so leave a buffer around corals and protect pump intakes. Review the listed size and species for each animal, then plan for its fully expanded diameter instead of its appearance immediately after shipping.
Tank maturity and stable water conditions
Anemones do best in established systems with predictable salinity, temperature, alkalinity, and nutrient levels. A newer aquarium may complete its nitrogen cycle but still experience rapid changes in algae, bacterial populations, pH, and dissolved nutrients. Waiting until the system is stable gives an anemone a better chance to settle without repeated environmental swings.
Test salinity and temperature during acclimation, then continue monitoring the parameters that matter to the rest of the reef. Stability is more useful than chasing a single perfect reading. Sudden changes in salinity, temperature, light intensity, or flow can lead to deflation or movement, while persistent instability can prevent the animal from attaching and feeding normally.
Lighting, flow, and placement
Most hosting anemones rely heavily on photosynthesis and need reef-capable lighting. The correct intensity depends on species, depth, fixture, and acclimation history. Begin with a conservative placement or reduced light schedule when moving an animal from different conditions, then increase exposure gradually while watching for normal expansion and color. A PAR reading is more useful than judging intensity by eye because blue reef lighting can appear dim while delivering substantial energy.
Provide broad, indirect water movement rather than a narrow jet aimed at the oral disc. The tentacles should move without the animal folding over or remaining tightly contracted. Offer rock crevices for species that secure their foot in rockwork and a suitable sand area for species that naturally anchor near or below the substrate. Secure loose rock before introduction because a wandering anemone can push into unstable pieces.
Feeding and routine care
A well-lit anemone receives much of its energy from its symbiotic algae, but occasional appropriately sized marine foods can support growth. Offer small portions rather than oversized pieces, and remove uneaten food before it breaks down. Feeding frequency should reflect the species, size, light level, and nutrient balance of the aquarium; more food is not automatically better.
During routine maintenance, keep powerheads screened and avoid exposing the animal to air unnecessarily. Watch the foot, mouth, inflation pattern, and attachment. Temporary deflation can be normal, especially after transport, but repeated gaping, failure to attach, tissue damage, or a rapid loss of color calls for a review of water quality, lighting, flow, and possible physical injury.
Compatibility with clownfish, corals, and other animals
Clownfish do not require an anemone, and an anemone does not require clownfish. Hosting preferences vary by clownfish and anemone species, so a pairing should be researched rather than assumed. A clownfish may also be too enthusiastic with a newly introduced or small anemone. Let the anemone attach and expand, and monitor the interaction instead of forcing the fish into contact.
Anemones possess stinging cells and need separation from corals. Because they can move, the initial gap may not remain permanent. Avoid placing delicate corals directly along a likely travel path and be prepared to move nearby frags if the anemone relocates. Fish and mobile invertebrates are usually able to avoid a healthy anemone, but species-specific predation and compatibility risks still apply.
