TSA Ice Blast Gorgonian Coral FAQ's

Why did my bright metallic green centers fade to dull green or brown?

This coral’s color shifts with spectrum and nutrient balance. Excess white light and high phosphate can deepen zooxanthellae, muting fluorescence. Increase blue/UV channels, keep NO3 ~5–15 ppm and PO4 ~0.03–0.1 ppm, and avoid rapid swings in alkalinity. Strong, randomized flow helps keep the mat clean so tissue reflects light better. Expect gradual recovery over 1–3 weeks.

How do I prevent Pachyclavularia violacea from overrunning my aquascape?

Mount it on an isolated “island” rock surrounded by sand. Trim the purple mat weekly at the edge with a razor and siphon fragments. If it creeps where you don’t want it, gently peel the mat; spot-treat any leftovers with a tiny dab of kalk paste. Avoid placing it on main rockwork or touching glass/overflows.

My colony has been closed for days—what should I check beyond basics?

Inspect for algae/cyano film on the mat; blast with a baster and increase flow. Look for vermetid snail threads or detritus lodged at the base—both irritate polyps. Verify stable alkalinity (7.5–9.5 dKH) and recent dips that may delay opening. If newly added, reduce intensity 20–30% and ramp up over 1–2 weeks. Most reopen once irritation is removed.

Is it aggressive, and how does it handle neighbors?

It rarely uses stings; its threat is smothering by overgrowth. It can crawl over zoanthids, mushrooms, and even up glass. Conversely, many LPS and some euphyllids can burn it, leaving bare patches that algae colonize. Provide space, prune routinely, and run fresh carbon if mixing with soft corals to reduce chemical stress.
Description
Photo is of mother colony. Frags are typically ¾" – 1" in size.

The TSA Ice Blast Gorgonian is an aquacultured branching soft coral selected for pale, icy coloration and dense feathery polyp coverage. Its upright fingers add height and movement without the hard skeleton and rigid growth form of an SPS coral. This is a TSA trade-name cultivar rather than a species-level identification, so care should be tuned from the coral’s polyp response instead of inferred from color alone.

Ice Blast Gorgonian quick care facts

Identification TSA trade-name Gorgonian; exact species not stated
Coral type Branching soft coral / octocoral
Care level Beginner-tagged; easy to moderate with stable conditions
Lighting Low to moderate; acclimate upward gradually
Water flow Low to moderate, indirect and variable
Placement Lower to middle rockwork with open space around the branches
Temperament Peaceful; protect from stinging neighbors and abrasion
Feeding Fine planktonic coral foods as a light supplement
Frag size Typically ¾–1 inch
Photo Mother colony; each cut-to-order frag varies

Color and growth form

The mother colony photograph shows thick cream-to-lavender branches with cool blue highlights under reef lighting. Expanded polyps give each branch a soft, frosted outline. Blue-heavy photography can intensify fluorescence, so expect the exact shade to change under daylight channels, tank depth, and your fixture. New growth may also look lighter than established tissue.

Placement and acclimation

Mount the frag upright on stable rock with the living tissue fully above the glue line. Begin in the lower half of an established reef tank, leave several inches for swaying branches, and keep it away from Euphyllia, aggressive LPS, and anything that can rub it. Increase light only after the frag is opening consistently.

How to tune light and flow

Start with lower light and indirect movement that gently stirs the polyps. The goal is enough cross-flow to prevent detritus and film algae from settling without pinning the branches in one direction. If polyps repeatedly retract, soften or redirect the stream. If debris collects, widen the flow pattern or move the frag into cleaner circulation.

Feeding Ice Blast Gorgonian

Light supports reef-lit Gorgonians, but the polyps can also capture suspended food. Offer a small amount of Reef Genetics Premium Coral Food or PolypLab Reef-Roids once or twice weekly. Pause the return pump briefly while leaving gentle circulation on, then restore filtration after the food has passed the colony. Heavy feeding is unnecessary and can elevate nutrients.

Routine care and water stability

Keep temperature, salinity, and alkalinity steady rather than chasing a single number. A practical target is 75–79°F, 1.025–1.026 specific gravity, and 8–9.5 dKH. Inspect the branches for trapped algae, exposed axis, or receding tissue. Gently baste settled debris during maintenance and verify salinity with a calibrated instrument.

Troubleshooting

A newly shipped frag may remain closed for a day or two. Check salinity, nearby stinging corals, and direct pump pressure before moving it repeatedly. Some Gorgonians periodically shed a thin film; improve broad flow and gently baste loose material. Persistent bare areas, algae rooted into tissue, or continuing recession are not normal—remove irritants and stabilize conditions promptly.

How this TSA Gorgonian compares

TSA Snow Flurry Gorgonian has a finer, more open branching pattern, while TSA Whirlwind Gorgonian presents larger fluffy polyps and warmer pink tones. Ice Blast is the compact, densely textured option for reefers who want an icy focal point without a broad sea-fan silhouette.

Frag size, shipping, and what you receive

The listing photo shows the mother colony. You will receive a cut-to-order frag that is typically ¾–1 inch, so branch count and shape naturally vary. Temperature-acclimate the sealed bag, follow a coral-safe inspection or dip protocol, rinse with clean saltwater, and mount securely. Give the frag quiet time to reopen before changing placement.

Pairs well with

Reef Breeders RP-12.5 Wavemaker for adjustable broad flow, Reef Genetics Reef Glue for secure mounting, Brightwell FragRecover Coral Dip for arrival protocol, and Tropic Eden Pro-1 Refractometer for stable salinity.
