At Top Shelf Aquatics, we specialize in aquaculturing Acropora frags from a wide range of species including tenuis, millepora, staghorn, and more. Each frag is grown in our 30,000-gallon propagation systems using a mix of Radion LEDs and metal halides. We monitor each frag closely for coloration, growth response, and tissue development. Our high-flow systems use Ecotech Marine MP pumps, Octo Pulse, and Sicce XStream wave makers to replicate the strong, variable water movement Acros require.

Acropora FAQs

What makes Acropora more challenging than other corals?
Acropora are small polyp stony (SPS) corals that require consistent, stable conditions to thrive. They're sensitive to fluctuations in alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, temperature, and nutrient levels. Even small parameter swings can lead to tissue loss or color fading.

They also demand intense lighting (PAR 250–450) and strong, randomized flow to support photosynthesis and waste removal. While they can be incredibly rewarding, Acropora are best kept in systems that are mature, stable, and well-maintained.
How does TSA grow and condition Acropora before sale?
All of our Acropora are propagated in-house by our reef team using a mix of Radion LEDs and metal halides for balanced growth and coloration. Frags are cut using bone cutters (not band saws), then mounted and given time to fully heal and encrust on their plugs.

They’re housed in high-flow systems powered by Ecotech MP pumps, Octo Pulse, and Sicce XStream wave makers to mimic real reef conditions. We monitor pH, temperature, and trace elements carefully—because we know even slight changes can impact growth.
What lighting and flow do Acropora corals need?
Acropora require high-intensity lighting—typically in the range of PAR 250–450 depending on species and placement. We recommend lighting systems with strong blue spectrum and controllable white channels for optimal growth and coloration.

Flow should be strong and randomized, not laminar. This helps prevent detritus buildup, improves oxygenation, and encourages robust tissue development. Placement near wave makers or areas of indirect surge tends to yield the best results.
What should I expect after placing a new Acropora frag in my tank?
Acropora frags may take 3 to 6 months to fully settle into a new system. During this time, growth may appear stagnant as the coral adapts to your lighting, flow, and nutrient profile. It's normal to see subtle color shifts or slower polyp activity early on.

Once settled, well-placed Acros can grow rapidly and color up intensely. Consistency in parameters, regular testing, and trace element supplementation will help speed up acclimation and long-term growth.
What do Acropora eat, and should they be fed?
While Acros get most of their energy from photosynthesis, they also benefit from small particle foods and dissolved nutrients. At TSA, we feed a custom blend that includes Tisochrysis, Rhodomonas, and Tetraselmis phytoplankton, as well as Benepets and Reef Roids.

We turn off flow for 15–20 minutes during feeding to give polyps time to capture food. Feeding not only supports growth but also enhances coloration by improving zooxanthellae density and tissue health.
