Shop bounce mushroom corals for sale, from OG bounce lineages to Sunkist, Mardi Gras, and other named morphs. Bounce mushrooms are Rhodactis that develop raised, bubble-like vesicles across the disc, and the size and density of those bubbles is what separates a good bounce from a great one. The most collectible of the mushroom corals, they want low light and very gentle flow, which makes them one of the few high-value soft corals that thrives in the shaded corners of a reef. Every bounce here ships with a live arrival guarantee.

Bounce Mushroom Care FAQ

What makes a mushroom coral bounce?

A bounce mushroom is a Rhodactis whose disc develops raised, fluid-filled vesicles instead of a flat or lightly textured surface. Those bubbles are what the hobby means by bounce, and they can range from a few scattered blisters to a dense field covering the whole disc. The trait appears to be partly genetic and partly environmental: the same coral can inflate dramatically in one tank and flatten out in another, which is why keepers chase specific lineages and then tune conditions to bring the bubbles out.

Are bounce mushrooms hard to keep?

Bounce mushrooms are not difficult, they are just particular. They want low light, very gentle flow, and stable water, and they punish overexposure faster than almost any other soft coral. A bounce placed too high or in too much current will flatten, shrink, and sometimes detach and wander. Given a shaded, calm spot and left alone, they are hardy and long-lived. The real risk with bounces is their price rather than their difficulty.

Where should I place a bounce mushroom?

Low in the tank, out of direct light, and in the calmest water you can find. The sand bed, a shaded ledge, or a cave under an overhang all work well. Many keepers start a new bounce in a small container or an acclimation box on the sand so it can attach without being blown loose. Once it has gripped a small frag plug or rubble piece you can reposition it, but move it gradually rather than jumping it into brighter light.

Why did my bounce mushroom lose its bubbles?

Deflation is almost always an environmental response rather than disease. Too much light is the usual culprit, followed by too much flow, a recent shipping or acclimation stress, or a swing in salinity or temperature. A mushroom that has gone flat will often re-inflate over several weeks once it is moved lower and left undisturbed. Resist the urge to keep relocating it, since each move resets the adjustment period.

How fast do bounce mushrooms grow?

Slowly compared with common mushrooms, which is a large part of why they stay expensive. A healthy bounce enlarges its disc gradually and reproduces by splitting itself in two or by dropping small pedal lacerations from its base, typically producing one or two new individuals a year rather than a colony. Stable conditions and occasional feeding of fine particulate food encourage splitting more than any attempt to force growth with light.

Live coral buying guide

What are bounce mushroom corals?

Bounce mushrooms are corallimorphs in the genus Rhodactis that grow raised, fluid-filled vesicles across the surface of the disc rather than staying flat. Those bubbles catch and scatter light, which is what produces the dimensional, almost three-dimensional look that makes a good bounce so striking. They are not stony corals and build no skeleton, so they can detach, move, and reattach at will. Within the wider mushroom corals group, bounces are the most collectible and the most valuable.

Bounce lineages and named morphs

Bounces are traded by lineage, and the name carries real weight because bubble density and color are heritable to a degree:

  • OG bounce — the original lineage that started the category, typically orange to red with heavy, well-defined bubbles. The reference point everything else is compared against.
  • Sunkist and fruit-named morphs — saturated orange and yellow discs, usually with dense small vesicles.
  • Mardi Gras and multicolor morphs — mixed green, purple, and orange across one disc, prized for contrast rather than pure bubble count.
  • Uranium, Eclipse, and other collector lineages — named releases from specific farms, priced on rarity and how reliably they hold their bubbles.

Bounce mushroom care: light, flow, and feeding

Low light and low flow are the whole formula. Bounces sit at the bottom of the tank, out of direct beams, in water that barely moves. If you are running intense fixtures for SPS, compare shaded placement options before adding one and review your reef lighting coverage. Keep salinity, alkalinity, and temperature steady with reliable water testing equipment. They are photosynthetic but respond well to occasional fine particulate or amino-based coral food, which supports splitting.

Protecting a high-value bounce

Because bounces detach and wander, the practical risk is losing one to a powerhead or an overflow rather than to poor water quality. Screen intakes, start new arrivals in an acclimation box or a low-walled container on the sand, and give the mushroom time to grip a plug before you place it in the display. Keep them clear of aggressive LPS, and watch for wandering neighbors: other corallimorphs and anemones will happily settle on top of a bounce and smother it.

Collecting bounces and other corallimorphs

Bounces reward patience more than technique, and most collectors build a shaded bottom shelf rather than scattering them. Compare the wider mushroom corals range for ricordea and hairy mushrooms that share the same low-light preference, browse all live corals for sale, or look through signature corals for other named lineages.
