Selecting a Dragonet

Choose a fish with a rounded body, clear eyes, intact fins, and active hunting behavior. Ask what it currently eats before purchase because prepared-food acceptance varies. A mandarin dragonet for sale may look small, but its long-term food supply matters more than its initial size. Compare additional species in saltwater fish.

Mature Habitat

Dragonets benefit from a mature, stable aquarium with porous rock, sheltered resting areas, and abundant surfaces for natural prey. New or highly sterile systems may not produce enough copepods. Avoid aggressive flow at every resting site, maintain consistent water quality, and use aquarium supplies to monitor conditions.

Feeding and Compatibility

Offer small foods in several locations and confirm the fish actually consumes them rather than merely investigating. Live copepods, enriched frozen fare, and appropriately sized options from fish food may help support a varied plan. Peaceful tankmates are preferred because fast feeders can outcompete a slow, methodical dragonet.

Acclimation and Observation

Acclimate gradually according to the source-water difference, then release the dragonet near protected rockwork with the lights reduced. Avoid exposing it to sudden salinity or temperature shifts. Observe breathing, body condition, feeding response, and interactions daily, especially during the first weeks, and adjust feeding access if weight declines.
