FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
Is a 30-gallon aquarium sufficient for a Green Mandarin Dragonet?
A 30-gallon tank is credible only when it is mature, heavily rocked and capable of producing continuous live prey or supporting reliable target feeding. Many keepers find larger, pod-rich systems more dependable, since tank age, prey density and competition matter more than volume alone.
How can I tell whether a mandarin is already eating prepared food?
Ask to see the fish feed before purchase. Wild-caught individuals commonly depend on live copepods and amphipods, while captive-bred specimens are often willing to take frozen plankton, mysis or brine shrimp.
Which tankmates work well with this dragonet?
Peaceful fish that will not bully it or outcompete it for slowly eaten food are the best companions. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species, additional males, and heavy copepod competitors such as some wrasses.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Green Mandarin is one of the most visually distinctive saltwater fish in the marine aquarium hobby, displaying an intricate pattern of electric blue, turquoise, emerald green, orange, and red across the entire body and fins. Its slow, deliberate movement across live rock and constant searching behavior give it a completely different presence from typical open-water reef fish. Mature males can also develop an elongated first dorsal spine, adding even more visual impact.
Synchiropus splendidus is native to the Western Pacific, ranging from the Ryukyu Islands south toward Australia. In nature, it inhabits protected lagoons and inshore reefs with coral rubble, silty bottoms, and complex reef structure where it continuously hunts tiny crustaceans and other microfauna. This specialized feeding behavior is the most important consideration when keeping the species in captivity.
Peaceful, compact, and completely coral safe, the Green Mandarin is an outstanding addition to a mature reef aquarium. Success depends less on aquarium volume than on having established live rock, abundant natural forage, and a reliable feeding strategy. Specimens already accepting frozen or prepared foods are considerably easier to maintain, but access to copepods remains highly beneficial.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful

Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Western Pacific — Ryukyu Islands to Australia
Scientific Name: Synchiropus splendidus
Tank Requirements
The Green Mandarin performs best in a mature, biologically established reef aquarium containing substantial live rock and a healthy population of copepods and other small crustaceans. Complex rockwork with caves, crevices, rubble zones, and shaded areas provides both security and extensive surfaces for natural foraging.
A sand substrate is beneficial but not strictly required. Fine sand, rubble, and mature rockwork create additional habitat for the microfauna the fish spends much of the day hunting.
Moderate reef-style water movement is appropriate, but extremely turbulent flow across every portion of the aquarium should be avoided. Provide calmer areas where the mandarin can forage comfortably along the substrate and rock surfaces.
A refugium can be particularly useful for maintaining populations of copepods and other natural foods. Because mandarins continually graze throughout the day, the aquarium's ability to replenish microfauna is an important part of long-term husbandry.
Diet and Feeding
The Green Mandarin is a specialized microcarnivore that naturally consumes copepods, amphipods, and other tiny benthic crustaceans throughout the day. A mature aquarium with established microfauna is highly recommended, particularly for specimens that do not readily accept prepared foods.
Offer live copepods along with enriched frozen foods such as finely chopped mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, Calanus, small frozen plankton, and specialized frozen blends. Captive-bred or well-acclimated individuals may also accept small sinking pellets.
Prepared foods should be offered in small portions near the fish's normal feeding area. Because mandarins feed slowly, they can easily be outcompeted by aggressive or fast-feeding tankmates.
Several small feeding opportunities throughout the day are preferable when natural copepod populations are limited. Regularly observe body condition, as a mandarin can continue actively searching for food even when insufficient prey is available.
Temperament and Tankmates
Green Mandarins are peaceful toward most unrelated marine fish and are best housed with calm reef community species that will not harass or outcompete them.
Avoid excessive competition from other dedicated microfauna predators, particularly in smaller aquariums. Multiple dragonets, certain wrasses, and other heavy copepod feeders can rapidly reduce the available natural food supply.
Two males should generally not be housed together because territorial aggression can occur. A compatible male and female may be maintained as a pair when sufficient space and food resources are available.
Aggressive fish that continually chase the mandarin or prevent it from feeding are poor choices. Slow, peaceful feeding conditions greatly improve long-term success.
Reef Compatibility
The Green Mandarin is considered reef safe and does not normally damage corals, anemones, clams, or other ornamental sessile invertebrates.
It spends much of its time picking tiny crustaceans and microfauna from live rock and substrate rather than bothering established ornamental shrimp, crabs, or snails.
Its small adult size, peaceful behavior, and constant activity among the rockwork make it particularly well suited to mature mixed reef aquariums.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Maintain stable water chemistry and consistently good water quality. Stability is more important than continually adjusting parameters to reach an exact number within these ranges.
Common Considerations
-
Mature aquarium strongly recommended: Established live rock and healthy copepod populations significantly improve long-term feeding opportunities.
-
Specialized feeding requirements: Some individuals may be reluctant to accept frozen or prepared foods, making natural microfauna especially important.
-
Watch body condition: A sunken abdomen or visibly thinning body can indicate that the available food supply is inadequate.
-
Avoid excessive food competition: Other dragonets and heavy copepod-feeding fish can compete directly for the same limited natural food source.
-
Male aggression: Multiple males may fight, while a compatible male and female can potentially be maintained together in an appropriately established aquarium.
