FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

What aquarium size should I plan for?

Plan on at least 20 gallons of well-established marine aquarium for an individual. Provide generous rockwork and shelter alongside open hovering space, and scale up the shelter and floor area if you keep more than one.

Should I buy one Pajama Cardinalfish or a group?

Either approach works, since this species is kept successfully alone and also forms small aggregations in the wild. A small group makes a more natural display but needs extra room and plentiful shelter because a dominance hierarchy may develop.

Is it safe with corals and small invertebrates?

Yes, it is reef safe and is not expected to damage corals, and clams and ordinary invertebrates are generally compatible. Use some caution with very small fish or tiny ornamental invertebrates, as cardinalfish of this genus may eat animals small enough to swallow.

The Pajama Cardinalfish (Sphaeramia nematoptera) is a distinctive saltwater fish known for its unusual patchwork coloration and calm, hovering behavior. Its yellow-green face is highlighted by vivid red eyes, while a broad dark vertical band separates the front of the body from a pale silver posterior covered in reddish-purple spots. Long fins and a deep, compressed body give this peaceful cardinalfish an unmistakable appearance in a marine aquarium.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, the Pajama Cardinalfish ranges from Java east to Fiji, north to the Ryukyu Islands, and south to the Great Barrier Reef. It inhabits sheltered lagoons and bays, commonly forming loose aggregations among branching corals during daylight hours before dispersing to feed after dark.

Reaching approximately 3.5 inches as an adult, this species is well suited to peaceful reef aquariums and community fish-only systems. Its manageable size, reef-safe behavior, and willingness to accept common aquarium foods make it an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a colorful, relatively undemanding marine fish.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Easy
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore / Planktivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Indo-Pacific
Scientific Name: Sphaeramia nematoptera

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature saltwater aquarium with plenty of rockwork, caves, overhangs, and branching structures where the Pajama Cardinalfish can retreat during the day. Open areas should also be available for hovering and nighttime feeding activity.

Moderate, varied water movement is appropriate, although calmer areas around caves and rock structures are beneficial. This species naturally occupies relatively sheltered reef environments and does not require intense directional flow.

No specialized substrate is necessary. A sand-bottom reef aquarium with live rock provides a natural setting, but the species can also thrive in appropriately maintained bare-bottom systems.

A secure aquarium cover is recommended, particularly during acclimation or when territorial interactions occur.

Diet and Feeding

The Pajama Cardinalfish is primarily a carnivorous planktivore that feeds on small crustaceans and other zooplankton.

In captivity, offer mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine seafood, small krill, and quality frozen plankton blends. Appropriately sized marine pellets may also be accepted once the fish is established.

Feed once or twice daily. Because this species naturally becomes more active around dusk and after dark, shy specimens may feed more confidently when food is offered during lower-light periods.

When keeping a group, distribute food across several areas of the aquarium to ensure less dominant individuals receive adequate nutrition.

Temperament and Tankmates

Pajama Cardinalfish are peaceful and generally well suited to community marine aquariums. They spend much of the day hovering close to shelter rather than actively defending large territories.

They can be maintained singly, as a compatible pair, or in a small group when sufficient space and hiding areas are available. Although they naturally form aggregations, aquarium groups may develop a social hierarchy, and weaker individuals should be monitored for persistent chasing or exclusion.

Suitable tankmates include peaceful clownfish, gobies, blennies, firefish, small wrasses, peaceful angelfish, and other community-oriented marine species.

Avoid large predatory fish and highly aggressive species that may intimidate or consume them.

Reef Compatibility

The Pajama Cardinalfish is reef safe and does not normally damage corals, clams, or ornamental reef invertebrates.

It commonly hovers among branching corals and rockwork without feeding on the coral itself. Adult ornamental shrimp, snails, hermit crabs, and other typical reef-cleanup animals are generally compatible.

Very tiny crustaceans and planktonic organisms may be consumed as part of the fish's natural feeding behavior, but this does not prevent it from being an excellent choice for conventional reef aquariums.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Stable temperature, salinity, and overall water quality are more important than continually adjusting the aquarium to reach exact numbers. Consistent maintenance and adequate oxygenation will support long-term health.

Common Considerations

  • Group dynamics: Pajama Cardinalfish can be kept in groups, but social hierarchies may develop and subordinate individuals should be monitored.

  • Nocturnal tendencies: This species becomes more active during evening and nighttime hours and may initially prefer feeding under subdued lighting.

  • Adult size: Adults reach approximately 3.5 inches and require adequate shelter and swimming room despite their relatively sedentary behavior.

  • Peaceful temperament: Avoid highly aggressive or predatory tankmates that may intimidate or consume this relatively calm species.

  • Reef compatibility: Corals and typical ornamental reef invertebrates are generally left undisturbed.

Pajama Cardinalfish (Sphaeramia nematoptera)

The Pajama Cardinalfish is a peaceful, nocturnal reef fish with a quirky and unmistakable appearance. Its body features a greenish-yellow face, a bold red eye, and a midsection marked by a black vertical band, followed by a speckled rear half covered in red-orange polka dots—resembling a pair of colorful pajamas. Calm and easygoing, this species is a favorite for both beginner and experienced aquarists.

Tank Requirements

Pajama Cardinals do well in tanks of 30 gallons or more, with moderate flow and ample rockwork to provide hiding spots and shaded areas. As schooling fish, they are best kept in small groups (3 or more) to encourage natural social behavior, but ensure adequate space to prevent bickering within the group. They adapt easily to both reef and fish-only systems.

Peaceful and Reef-Safe

These cardinalfish are completely reef-safe, posing no threat to corals or invertebrates. Their peaceful nature makes them ideal for community aquariums, where they typically keep to themselves or their group. While mostly active at night, they adapt to aquarium lighting schedules and become more visible during the day.

Diet and Feeding

Pajama Cardinals are carnivorous and easy to feed, readily accepting a wide range of foods. Offer high-quality frozen foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, along with meaty pellets and flakes. Feedings should be small and frequent, especially in systems with strong competition for food.

Tankmates and Behavior

Naturally peaceful and slow-moving, Pajama Cardinals are excellent companions for other non-aggressive fish, including gobies, blennies, clownfish, and wrasses. Avoid pairing them with fast, boisterous or aggressive tankmates that may outcompete them at feeding time. In groups, they exhibit mild pecking order behavior but rarely cause real harm. They are also known for hovering motionless in mid-water, adding a calm, mesmerizing dynamic to any tank.
