FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

How large does the Red Mandarin Dragonet get?

Adults reach approximately 3 inches, making this one of the smallest dragonets kept in home aquariums.

What kind of aquarium suits this dragonet?

A mature reef system of at least 30 gallons with an open sand bed, coral rubble, and plenty of live rock surface works well, since the fish grazes the bottom continuously for tiny invertebrates.

Is the Red Mandarin Dragonet reef safe?

Yes. It ignores corals, clams, shrimp, crabs, and snails, feeding instead on the minute organisms living within the sand and rockwork.

Description
This is not a WYSIWYG fish. You will receive a similar fish, but coloration and pattern may vary.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.

The Red Mandarin Dragonet is an extraordinary saltwater fish displaying a rich red-to-orange base covered in intricate electric-blue, turquoise, and green markings. This coloration represents a naturally occurring red form of the familiar Green Mandarin rather than a separate species. Its elaborate pattern, oversized pelvic fins, and slow, deliberate movement across the rockwork make it one of the most distinctive small marine aquarium fish available.

Synchiropus splendidus naturally inhabits protected lagoons and inshore reefs of the Western Pacific, where it spends much of the day searching coral rubble and reef structure for tiny crustaceans. Adults remain relatively small, reaching around 3 inches, but their specialized feeding behavior makes a mature, biologically established aquarium far more important than their size might suggest.

Peaceful and completely coral safe, the Red Mandarin Dragonet is especially appealing in a mature reef aquarium with abundant live rock and healthy microfauna populations. Success depends on providing consistent access to appropriately sized foods, particularly copepods, while avoiding tankmates that create excessive competition at feeding time.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore / Microcarnivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Western Pacific — Ryukyu Islands to Australia
Scientific Name: Synchiropus splendidus

Tank Requirements

A mature reef aquarium with substantial live rock is strongly recommended. Complex rockwork, coral rubble, caves, and crevices provide security while supporting populations of copepods and other microfauna that the dragonet can hunt throughout the day.

A sand substrate is beneficial but not essential. Areas of rubble and mature rock are particularly valuable because they create protected habitat where natural prey populations can reproduce.

Moderate reef-style water movement is appropriate, but provide calmer areas where the fish can forage comfortably along rock surfaces and the substrate. Strong flow across every portion of the aquarium can make feeding more difficult for this slow-moving species.

A refugium can be especially helpful by providing a protected area for copepods to reproduce. Larger, mature systems generally maintain natural food populations more easily than newly established or lightly structured aquariums.

Diet and Feeding

The Red Mandarin Dragonet is a specialized microcarnivore that naturally feeds on copepods, amphipods, and other tiny crustaceans. A mature aquarium with an established population of microfauna provides valuable continuous grazing opportunities.

Offer live copepods along with small frozen foods such as enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped mysis shrimp, Calanus, and appropriately sized frozen plankton blends. Well-acclimated and captive-bred specimens may also accept small sinking pellets or other prepared marine foods.

Several small feeding opportunities throughout the day are preferable when natural prey populations are limited. Because mandarins feed slowly and deliberately, food should reach areas where the fish normally forages.

Prepared-food acceptance should not be assumed with every specimen. Monitor body condition carefully, as a dragonet may continue actively searching the aquarium even when the available natural food population is insufficient.

Temperament and Tankmates

Red Mandarin Dragonets are peaceful toward most unrelated marine fish and are best maintained with calm reef community species that will not harass them or consistently outcompete them for food.

Avoid excessive competition from other fish that rely heavily on copepods and similar microfauna, particularly in smaller aquariums. Multiple dragonets and certain wrasses can place considerable pressure on the same natural food supply.

Males can be territorial toward other male mandarins and generally should not be housed together in limited aquarium space. A compatible male and female may be maintained as a pair when the aquarium provides sufficient territory and food resources.

Fast, aggressive feeders can make maintaining adequate nutrition difficult even if they do not directly harass the dragonet.

Reef Compatibility

The Red Mandarin Dragonet is reef safe and does not normally damage corals, anemones, clams, or other ornamental sessile invertebrates.

It spends most of its time picking tiny crustaceans and other microfauna from rockwork and substrate. Established ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, and other typical reef-cleanup animals are generally compatible.

Its compact size, peaceful behavior, and continuous foraging make it particularly well suited to mature mixed reef aquariums.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Stable water chemistry is more important than continually adjusting the aquarium to reach an exact number within these ranges. Maintain good oxygenation, consistent salinity, and excellent overall water quality.

Common Considerations

  • Mature aquarium strongly recommended: Established live rock and healthy copepod populations provide important continuous feeding opportunities.

  • Specialized feeding behavior: Not every specimen immediately accepts frozen foods or pellets, so prepared-food acceptance should never be assumed.

  • Monitor body condition: A noticeably pinched or sunken abdomen can indicate inadequate food availability.

  • Limit food competition: Other dragonets and dedicated copepod-feeding fish can significantly reduce the available natural food supply.

  • Male territoriality: Two males may fight, while a compatible male and female can potentially coexist in a sufficiently mature and well-fed aquarium.
