FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

How large should the aquarium be for a Red Scooter Dragonet?

Plan on at least 50 gallons for a single fish so the system can sustain a stable microfauna population. Use 55 gallons or more if you intend to keep more than one male.

Can a Red Scooter Dragonet be kept in a reef aquarium?

It will not harm corals, clams, shrimp, crabs, or snails, and it often perches harmlessly on coral branches. The limiting factor is whether the rock and sand can supply enough live copepods to sustain it.

Why is feeding this dragonet considered difficult?

It is a slow, deliberate grazer that hunts live copepods and amphipods all day and is easily outcompeted by faster tankmates. Many individuals never take frozen food, so ongoing live food supplementation or a productive refugium is usually required.

The Red Scooter Dragonet is a small, highly patterned saltwater fish prized for its vivid red, orange, cream, and brown markings and its unusual bottom-dwelling behavior. Rather than swimming continuously in open water, it moves in short hops across rockwork and substrate while searching for tiny prey. Its elaborate fin patterning and expressive movements make it especially appealing in peaceful reef aquariums.

Synchiropus stellatus, commonly sold as the Red Scooter Dragonet, is native to the Indo-Pacific and is associated with reef rubble, sandy bottoms, and protected reef environments. In nature, it spends much of the day picking copepods, amphipods, and other minute crustaceans from rock and substrate surfaces.

Although small and peaceful, this species is more demanding than its size suggests because of its specialized feeding habits. It is best suited to mature reef aquariums with abundant natural microfauna and should not be selected solely on the assumption that it will readily accept prepared foods.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Moderate to Expert
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore / Micro-predator
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Indo-Pacific
Scientific Name: Synchiropus stellatus

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature marine aquarium with substantial live rock, rubble zones, and areas of open sand. A well-established system with a healthy population of copepods and other small crustaceans is strongly preferred.

The Red Scooter Dragonet spends most of its time close to the bottom, so abundant rock surfaces and sheltered feeding areas are more important than extensive open swimming space. Moderate water movement is appropriate, but provide calmer zones where food can settle and be easily located.

A mature refugium or other source of naturally reproducing microfauna can be especially beneficial in supporting long-term feeding.

Diet and Feeding

The Red Scooter Dragonet is a specialized carnivore that naturally feeds on copepods, amphipods, and other tiny benthic invertebrates.

A mature aquarium with a strong natural pod population provides an important baseline food source. Some specimens may also accept frozen copepods, enriched baby brine shrimp, finely chopped mysis shrimp, small frozen marine blends, and very small sinking foods.

Offer small portions multiple times per day when possible. Food should reach the bottom and rock surfaces where the dragonet naturally forages.

Monitor body condition closely. A dragonet that appears active but gradually develops a pinched or hollow abdomen may not be consuming enough food.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Red Scooter Dragonet is peaceful and best housed with calm community fish that will not outcompete it aggressively at feeding time.

Suitable tankmates include gobies, small blennies, cardinalfish, firefish, peaceful wrasses, and other non-aggressive reef species. Avoid large, aggressive fish and extremely fast feeders that may prevent the dragonet from obtaining enough food.

Males can become territorial toward other male dragonets. A compatible male and female may sometimes be maintained together in a mature aquarium with adequate space and food availability.

Reef Compatibility

The Red Scooter Dragonet is considered reef safe.

It does not normally damage corals, clams, shrimp, snails, or other established ornamental invertebrates. Its feeding behavior is directed toward tiny crustaceans and microfauna living on rockwork and substrate.

It may compete for copepods with other specialized microfauna feeders, such as mandarins and certain wrasses, so stocking should account for the available natural food supply.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Maintain stable salinity, temperature, and overall water quality. Mature biological stability is especially important for this species.

Common Considerations

  • Specialized feeding: A mature copepod population greatly improves long-term success.
  • Slow feeder: Fast or aggressive tankmates may prevent it from receiving enough food.
  • Monitor body condition: Weight loss can occur even when the fish appears active and is constantly foraging.
  • Peaceful reef species: Corals and established ornamental invertebrates are generally ignored.
  • Male territoriality: Avoid keeping multiple males together unless the aquarium is large and carefully managed.
