The Bicolor Angelfish is a striking dwarf angelfish instantly recognized by its dramatic two-tone coloration. The head and front half of the body are brilliant yellow, transitioning sharply into a deep royal-blue posterior, while a blue marking extends over the eye and the tail returns to bright yellow. This bold contrast makes it one of the most visually distinctive marine aquarium fish in the Centropyge genus.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, Centropyge bicolor inhabits lagoons, reef slopes, channels, and coral-and-rubble habitats where it moves between sheltering areas while grazing and searching for food. Adults can reach approximately 6 inches, making this one of the larger dwarf angelfish and a species that benefits from substantial rockwork and swimming room.

With its active behavior and vivid coloration, the Bicolor Angelfish can become a standout addition to a mature fish-only aquarium or carefully planned reef aquarium. It is moderately hardy once established but requires a varied diet, abundant grazing surfaces, and consideration of its territorial nature and potential to nip corals and clam mantles.

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature saltwater aquarium with substantial live rock arranged to create caves, crevices, overhangs, and multiple retreat areas. Bicolor Angelfish naturally move between sheltering locations and benefit from complex rockwork that allows them to establish territory while also providing surfaces for grazing.

Leave sufficient open swimming space around the aquascape, particularly for a full-grown specimen. Because this species can approach 6 inches, long-term housing should provide considerably more room than its “dwarf angelfish” designation might suggest.

An established aquarium with natural algae growth and mature live rock is preferable. Moderate to strong reef-style water movement, good oxygenation, and stable water quality are appropriate.

Diet and Feeding

The Bicolor Angelfish is an omnivore that naturally consumes algae along with small crustaceans, worms, and other available reef foods. Captive specimens should receive a varied diet combining both marine vegetable matter and protein-rich foods.

Offer spirulina-based foods, marine algae preparations, quality angelfish formulas, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped marine seafood, and high-quality pellets or frozen blends. Foods formulated for marine angelfish that contain sponge and other natural marine ingredients can also be useful additions to the diet.

Feed two to three smaller meals per day when practical. Established live rock provides valuable opportunities for grazing between prepared feedings.

Temperament and Tankmates

Bicolor Angelfish are semi-aggressive and can become territorial once established, particularly toward other dwarf angelfish and similarly shaped fish. Providing extensive rockwork with multiple hiding areas can help reduce territorial pressure.

They generally coexist well with appropriately sized peaceful to moderately assertive marine fish. Very timid species may be intimidated by a dominant individual, especially in smaller aquariums.

Keeping a single Bicolor Angelfish is the simplest arrangement for most home aquariums. Combining multiple dwarf angelfish requires substantially more space and careful species selection because territorial aggression can develop.

When adding one to an established community, introducing the angelfish after more peaceful species can sometimes reduce its opportunity to claim the entire aquarium as its territory.

Reef Compatibility

The Bicolor Angelfish is reef safe with caution. Although many individuals can be maintained in reef aquariums, dwarf angelfish are not reliably coral safe.

Individuals may nip at fleshy stony corals, soft corals, zoanthids, and clam mantles. The likelihood and severity of this behavior varies considerably from fish to fish, so any specimen placed in a reef aquarium should be monitored.

Providing frequent, varied feeding and plenty of natural grazing opportunities may help keep the fish occupied, but it cannot guarantee that corals will be ignored.

Ornamental shrimp, crabs, and snails are generally less of a concern than sessile invertebrates, although individual behavior can vary.
