Selecting a Dottyback
Choose a dottyback with bright, even coloration, clear eyes, intact fins, steady breathing, and confident movement around shelter. Confirm the species because adult size, temperament, and coloration differ. Ask about feeding history and current tankmates, then compare compatible candidates from the broader saltwater fish collection.
Habitat and Acclimation
Build a rockscape with several caves, narrow retreats, and broken sight lines so no single opening controls the entire aquarium. Ensure rocks are stable and filtration supports the planned community. Acclimate according to shipping salinity and temperature, dim the display, and release near shelter. Prepare nets and water-testing aquarium supplies.
Feeding
Offer varied, appropriately sized marine foods in controlled portions. Dottybacks often feed eagerly, but timid new arrivals may remain close to a cave until settled. Select pellets, frozen preparations, or other options from fish food, observe actual consumption, and avoid overfeeding. A consistent routine also helps reveal changes in behavior.
Compatibility and Stocking Order
Plan around the chosen species rather than assuming every dottyback has the same temperament. Some may challenge similarly shaped fish or defend rockwork, while others are less forceful. Small ornamental shrimp can be at risk. Consider adding territorial individuals after peaceful residents, provide multiple retreats, and watch closely for chasing, blocked access to food, or persistent hiding.
