Shop aquacultured Pectinia corals for sale, including Space Invader, Cloverfield, and rainbow morphs. Also called spiny cup or lettuce coral, Pectinia grows thin, blade-like fronds that rise into jagged spires, giving a sculptural silhouette no other LPS coral matches. They want low to moderate light and gentle flow, grow quickly once settled, and carry some of the most saturated greens and purples in the hobby, which puts them alongside chalice corals as collector pieces. Every Pectinia frag here is grown in our own systems and ships with a live arrival guarantee.

Pectinia Coral Care FAQ

Are Pectinia corals hard to keep?

Pectinia are more forgiving than their delicate appearance suggests. They want low to moderate light, gentle flow, and stable alkalinity, and once settled they grow faster than most collector LPS. The thin fronds are fragile and break easily during handling, so the main risk is mechanical damage rather than husbandry. Handle frags by the plug, never by the blade, and give the colony space to build outward.

Where should I place a Pectinia coral?

Low to middle rockwork with gentle, indirect flow and moderate light. Pectinia grow upward into thin spires, so they need vertical clearance as well as horizontal space, and they should not be tucked under a ledge that will block that growth. Strong direct current can snap fronds and drive tissue recession along the sharp edges, so favor turbulent, diffuse water movement over a direct stream.

Are Pectinia corals aggressive?

Yes, more than their appearance suggests. Pectinia extend sweeper tentacles at night and will sting neighbors within several inches, and the thin blades themselves can abrade adjacent corals as they grow. Allow at least four to six inches of clearance on all sides and check the tank after lights out to see the actual reach before committing to a placement.

How fast do Pectinia corals grow?

Quickly for a collector LPS. Once a frag attaches and begins laying down new skeleton, it adds blade area steadily and can outgrow a small frag plug within months. Growth is driven mainly by stable alkalinity and calcium, with feeding as a secondary accelerator. Because the fronds are thin and grow outward in multiple directions, plan for a significantly larger footprint than the frag suggests.

Should I feed Pectinia corals?

Light feeding helps but is not essential. Pectinia are photosynthetic and will grow on light alone in a moderately fed tank, though small amounts of finely chopped meaty food or prepared LPS blends a couple of times a week support faster skeletal growth and better color. Target the food into the flow above the colony rather than placing it directly on the fronds, which have no large central mouth to accept a big piece.

How to Choose Live Corals for Your Reef Aquarium

What are Pectinia corals?

Pectinia is a genus of large polyp stony corals known as spiny cup or lettuce corals, built from thin, blade-like fronds that rise from a common base into irregular ridges and spires. Unlike the fleshy, rounded profile of most collector LPS, a Pectinia reads as sharp and architectural, and it holds color in deep greens, purples, and teals that stand out under blue-heavy lighting. They are among the more striking LPS corals for a mid-level shelf.

Named Pectinia morphs

Pectinia are traded by named color lineage much like chalices:

  • Space Invader — the best known Pectinia morph, with bright green blades against a contrasting dark body. The usual entry point into the genus.
  • Rainbow and multicolor morphs — lineages carrying three or more colors across the fronds, priced on how cleanly the colors separate.
  • Blueberry, Frozone, and cool-toned morphs — selected for blue and teal saturation, which shows strongest under actinic-heavy lighting.
  • Emerald and single-tone morphs — deep, uniform greens that grow quickly and offer strong value for filling a shelf.

Pectinia coral care: light, flow, and stability

Low to moderate light and gentle, turbulent flow suit Pectinia best. High intensity light bleaches the thin tissue quickly, and a direct current stream will snap fronds and start recession along the exposed edges. Review your reef lighting coverage before placing a frag high in the tank, and hold alkalinity and calcium steady with dependable water testing equipment, since the coral is continuously building new skeleton along every growing edge.

Handling fragile fronds

Pectinia blades are genuinely thin and break under pressure that other LPS shrug off. Always lift a frag by the plug or the base rather than the frond, avoid letting the coral touch rock or glass while you position it, and secure the plug firmly so the colony cannot topple as it grows top-heavy. A cleanly broken frond will usually heal and continue growing, but a crushed or torn edge often recedes, so careful handling matters more here than with fleshier corals.

Placing Pectinia in a collector reef

Pectinia earn their space through silhouette as much as color, so give them an open shelf where the spires can be seen from the side rather than burying them in a dense aquascape. Leave four to six inches of clearance for the nighttime sweepers. Compare other named-morph collector LPS in chalice corals and acan corals, or browse the full range of live corals for sale.
