VorTech MP40mQD - EcoTech Marine

The VorTech MP40mQD is EcoTech Marine's workhorse propeller pump for mid-to-large reef systems. Its core design keeps all powered components on the outside of the glass, coupling to the in-tank wet side through a magnetic assembly. This eliminates electrical components from the water column entirely, reducing shock risk and simplifying maintenance — the wet side can be removed and cleaned without disturbing the external driver. Flow is broad and diffuse rather than focused, which reduces dead spots and distributes water movement across a wider cross-section of the tank.

The included QuietDrive driver operates the pump with notably reduced mechanical noise compared to older VorTech generations. Mobius app connectivity is built in, requiring no additional modules or controllers for wireless programming. From the app, hobbyists can schedule mode changes, adjust intensity, set up night mode hours, and link multiple pumps for synchronized gyre or wave patterns. MXM compatibility allows direct integration with Neptune Systems Apex, consolidating pump control into Apex Fusion alongside other EcoTech and AquaIllumination equipment.

The MP40mQD ships with 12 distinct flow modes. Reef Crest and Short Pulse modes target high-energy SPS-dominated systems with frequent speed changes and sharp pulses. Nutrient Transport Mode runs a two-phase cycle — stirring detritus first, then pushing it toward the overflow — which is particularly useful for LPS and SPS tanks where particle suspension matters. Tidal Swell and Gyre modes suit larger tanks where long-range circulation and structured water columns are priorities. Feed Mode idles all linked wireless pumps simultaneously at the press of a button.

The MP40mQD is sized for tanks with glass or acrylic up to 0.75 inches (19mm) thick. It fits between the smaller MP10mQD (up to 2,500+ GPH, 9.5mm max thickness) and the larger MP60mQD (up to 9,000+ GPH, 26mm max thickness). For tanks in the 100–300 gallon range with moderate to heavy coral loads, a single MP40mQD is often sufficient; for larger systems or those requiring strong gyre circulation, pairing two units is the more common approach.
