The Hydra 32 HD represents a ground-up redesign of one of the more widely used LED fixtures in the hobby. Aqua Illumination's primary goals were efficiency and output: more LEDs, more PAR, and a wider effective spread—all while slimming the physical profile and reducing heat buildup enough to ease demands on the active cooling system. The result is a fixture that does more while running cooler and sitting lower over the water surface.
Optics are where the Hydra 32 HD makes its clearest gains over the previous generation. TIR (total internal reflector) lenses are used throughout, shaping each LED's output to improve efficiency and reduce the color banding that plagues many multi-channel fixtures. Combined with revised LED cluster geometry, colors mix more completely before reaching the water, which translates to better color rendering across corals at depth. Average PAR is up, and the effective spread stretches to 24" x 24" at a recommended mounting height of 8–10".
Spectrum control is handled through seven primary channels plus an independent moonlight channel—an addition not found on earlier Hydra models. The moonlight LED operates on its own channel so lunar simulations don't interfere with your primary programming. The myAI app manages all scheduling and intensity via direct Bluetooth connection to a phone or tablet, no hub required. For users already running a Neptune Apex system, MXM compatibility allows the Hydra 32 HD to be folded into Apex Fusion alongside EcoTech Marine equipment, eliminating the need to manage multiple apps.
Mounting hardware is sold separately. AI offers several configurations through the Hydra Mounting System: the Flex Arm for rimless tanks, HMS Multi Light Mount Kits with vertical rails, hanging kits for ceiling or wall suspension, and dedicated Hydra 32 brackets that allow individual positioning along an HMS track. The fixture ships with the light unit and its power supply.
