The Hydra 32 HD represents the current generation of Aqua Illumination's proven Hydra platform, bringing meaningful hardware revisions rather than a cosmetic refresh. The fixture runs 32 primary LEDs arranged across seven distinct color channels, supplemented by four dedicated moonlight LEDs on an independent eighth channel. TIR (total internal reflector) lenses reshape output from each LED cluster, which tightens color mixing, reduces visible color separation at the water surface, and extends usable spread to a 24" x 24" footprint at the recommended 8–10" mounting height.

The redesigned enclosure is notably thinner than its predecessor, and the revised thermal management reduces reliance on active cooling — a change that benefits long-term component life and lowers the audible footprint of the fixture over a quiet display tank. Improved water-resistance sealing makes the unit better suited to the inevitably humid environment above a reef, though it remains splash-resistant rather than waterproof. The slimmer profile also means less visual intrusion over open-top aquariums.

The dedicated moonlight channel is a notable addition for hobbyists who run natural photoperiod simulations. The channel operates independently of the main spectrum channels, allowing low-intensity, lunar-colored output after the main lighting cycle without affecting the primary schedule. This is handled entirely within the myAI app, which connects via Bluetooth Low Energy directly from a smartphone — no hub or bridge required for basic operation. For users on a Neptune Apex system, MXM compatibility brings the Hydra 32 HD under Apex Fusion control alongside EcoTech Marine equipment, eliminating the need to manage a separate app.

Mounting hardware is sold separately. AI offers a range of Hydra Mounting System (HMS) options including the Flex Arm for tank-wall attachment, multi-light rail kits for rimmed tanks, hanging kits for ceiling or wall suspension, and model-specific brackets that allow individual lights to slide and rotate along a track.
