Chaetomorpha Macroalgae - Reef Geneitcs
Goes well with:
Chaetomorpha (Chaetomorpha linum), commonly known as “Chaeto,” is one of the most popular and effective macroalgae for natural nutrient export in saltwater aquariums. Its fast-growing, wiry green strands actively consume excess nitrate and phosphate, helping to improve water quality and maintain a healthy, stable reef environment without the risk of attaching to rocks or corals.
Chaetomorpha thrives in refugiums where it receives moderate to strong water flow and is allowed to gently tumble. This tumbling motion exposes all sides of the algae to light, prevents detritus from accumulating within the mass, and encourages even, vigorous growth. While it can grow without tumbling, proper circulation significantly improves its overall health and nutrient uptake.
For optimal performance, provide moderate to high-intensity refugium lighting using a quality full-spectrum or horticultural LED. A photoperiod of 12–16 hours per day, often run opposite the display tank’s lighting schedule, encourages rapid growth while helping stabilize pH throughout the day and night.
As Chaetomorpha grows, regular harvesting is recommended. Removing a portion of the algae permanently exports the nitrate and phosphate it has absorbed, making it one of the most effective and natural methods of long-term nutrient control. Its dense structure also provides an ideal habitat for copepods, amphipods, mysid shrimp, and other beneficial microfauna, allowing them to reproduce safely before entering the display aquarium as a natural food source.
Unlike many other macroalgae, Chaetomorpha does not attach to rockwork and has an extremely low risk of becoming invasive in the display aquarium, making it a favorite among reef hobbyists of all experience levels.
Benefits
- Fast-growing, highly effective natural nutrient export
- Actively consumes nitrate and phosphate
- Helps stabilize aquarium pH when run on a reverse light cycle
- Excellent habitat for copepods, amphipods, and other beneficial microfauna
- Non-invasive and does not attach to rocks or corals
- Thrives with moderate to strong water flow and moderate to high lighting
- Easy to harvest and maintain for long-term nutrient management
Whether you’re establishing a new refugium or improving the performance of an existing one, Chaetomorpha remains one of the most reliable and effective macroalgae available for maintaining excellent water quality and supporting a thriving reef ecosystem.
