Choosing the Right Pack Size

Pick the size that matches your display tank’s water volume: Nano–40 gallons, 40–120 gallons, or 120 gallons and up. If your tank sits near the top of a range or has limited algae, start with the smaller pack and add more inverts later. It is easier to build a clean-up crew gradually than to feed an oversized one.

When to Add a Clean-Up Crew

Add your clean-up crew once the aquarium has fully cycled, ammonia and nitrite read zero, and the first film or diatom algae begins to appear. Adding a crew to a brand-new, algae-free tank leaves it with nothing to eat.

Acclimating Your Crew

Float the bags to match temperature, then drip acclimate over 45–60 minutes. Snails, hermits, and urchins are sensitive to rapid salinity changes. Place snails upright near rockwork after acclimation so they can attach quickly.

What to Expect

This reef clean-up crew package covers rock, glass, and sand. Snails and hermits graze film and hair algae, Nassarius Snails and the Tiger Sand Conch turn over the sand, and the Pincushion Urchin handles heavier algae on rockwork. Results build over several weeks rather than overnight, and a crew supports, but does not replace, water changes and nutrient control.

Once algae is under control, supplement with dried seaweed and sinking pellets so the crew does not go hungry. Keep a few empty shells in the tank so hermit crabs can upgrade without bothering your snails.

Compatibility

Avoid triggerfish, puffers, hogfish, and larger predatory wrasses, which may eat snails and hermit crabs. Harlequin shrimp eat urchins. The urchin and conch may shift unsecured coral frags, so glue loose pieces in place. Invertebrates are highly sensitive to copper, and copper-treated water or medications should never be added to an aquarium that houses them.
