Sea Lettuce Ulva Macroalgea - Reef Genetics
Goes well with:
QT Sea Lettuce (Ulva lactuca) is a fast-growing green macroalgae that is an excellent choice for refugiums, macroalgae displays, and estuarine aquariums. As it grows, it naturally consumes excess nitrate and phosphate, making it an effective and natural solution for nutrient export while helping to maintain stable water quality.
Its broad, leafy structure provides an ideal habitat for copepods, amphipods, isopods, and other beneficial microfauna, creating a productive refuge where these organisms can reproduce and thrive. Sea Lettuce also contributes to oxygen production through photosynthesis, supporting a healthier aquarium ecosystem.
Our QT Sea Lettuce is cultivated in isolation from fish and invertebrates, significantly reducing the risk of introducing unwanted pests, nuisance algae, or diseases into your aquarium.
Sea Lettuce grows best under moderate to strong lighting with moderate water flow. As it rapidly consumes nutrients, periodic harvesting is recommended to maintain healthy growth and maximize nutrient export. It is also readily grazed by many herbivorous fish, including tangs, rabbitfish, blennies, and some angelfish, making it an excellent natural food source.
Please Note: Ulva lactuca has the potential to undergo a reproductive event (“going sexual”) under certain environmental or lighting conditions. During this process, it can release reproductive cells into the aquarium and rapidly deteriorate. Because of this, Sea Lettuce may not be suitable for every reef aquarium. Regular harvesting, stable lighting, and maintaining healthy growth can help minimize the likelihood of this occurring.
