Soft Coral Care FAQ

What are considered soft corals?

Soft corals are corals that build no rigid calcium carbonate skeleton, supporting themselves instead with a flexible internal structure and tiny embedded spicules. The main groups kept in the hobby are zoanthids and palythoa, mushroom corals and corallimorphs, leather corals, xenia and its relatives, green star polyps, clove polyps, and Kenya tree. Because they are not laying down skeleton, they place far less demand on alkalinity and calcium than stony corals do.

Which soft corals are the easiest to keep in a saltwater aquarium?

Green Star Polyps, zoanthids, mushroom corals, and Xenia are the four most commonly recommended, with Kenya Tree and toadstool leathers close behind. All of them grow in conditions that would stress a stony coral: without a skeleton to build, they are far less sensitive to alkalinity and calcium swings, and most get their energy from light rather than target feeding. Mushrooms are the most tolerant of low light and weak flow, Green Star Polyps and Xenia grow the fastest, and zoanthids offer by far the widest range of colors. Several of these spread quickly, so give them their own rock where they can’t overgrow slower corals.

Are soft corals hardy?

Considerably hardier than stony corals, yes. Without a skeleton to build they are largely indifferent to the alkalinity and calcium swings that cause tissue recession in LPS and SPS, and most tolerate a wide range of light, flow, and nutrient levels. They still need stable salinity and temperature, a cycled tank, and protection from pests, but they forgive the kind of mistakes a new reefer inevitably makes.

Do I need to feed soft corals?

Generally no. Almost all soft corals kept in the hobby are photosynthetic and get most of their energy from symbiotic algae in their tissue, supplemented by dissolved organics absorbed directly from the water. Zoanthids and some mushrooms will take small particulate foods and may grow faster for it, but no soft coral in this collection requires target feeding. A tank carrying some nutrients actually suits most softies better than an ultra-clean one.

Which soft corals should a beginner avoid?

Avoid the ones that grow too well rather than the ones that are hard to keep. Green star polyps, xenia, clove polyps, and anthelia all spread fast enough to overrun a small aquascape, and they are genuinely difficult to remove once established on the main rockwork. They are excellent corals on an isolated island rock and a long-term problem in the middle of a reef. Also handle palythoa carefully, since some species carry palytoxin.

Live coral buying guide

What are soft corals?

Soft corals are corals that never lay down a rigid stony skeleton. Instead of the calcium carbonate structure that LPS and SPS corals build continuously, they rely on a flexible internal support and microscopic spicules embedded in the tissue, which is why a soft coral colony bends and sways with the current. That single difference drives everything else about keeping them: they place almost no demand on alkalinity and calcium, they tolerate nutrients well, and they are far more forgiving of an immature tank.

The main soft coral groups

Softies cover several distinct groups, each with its own character:

  • Zoanthids and palythoa — colonial button polyps in the widest color range of any coral group, spreading across rock in dense mats.
  • Mushroom corals — corallimorphs including ricordea, discosoma, rhodactis, and bounce mushrooms. The most tolerant of low light and low flow.
  • Leather corals — toadstool, finger, and Kenya tree colonies that grow into substantial centerpiece shapes.
  • Xenia and pulsing corals — Xenia, Anthelia, and Cespitularia, which pulse or wave continuously and grow extremely fast.
  • Green star polyps — an encrusting purple mat studded with bright waving polyps, the fastest spreader of all.

Soft coral care: light, flow, and nutrients

Most soft corals settle in under low to moderate light and moderate, indirect flow, and almost all of them adapt across a wider range than any stony coral would tolerate. Unusually, many softies prefer a tank carrying some nitrate and phosphate and will decline in ultra-low-nutrient systems run for SPS. Check your reef lighting before placing anything high in the tank, and keep salinity and temperature steady with reliable water testing equipment. Feeding is optional across the whole group.

Managing growth and chemical warfare

The two things that catch soft coral keepers out are speed and chemistry. Green star polyps, xenia, clove polyps, and anthelia can cover a rock in weeks and are very difficult to remove once they reach the main aquascape, so give the fast growers isolated island rocks from the start. Separately, soft corals release compounds into the water to compete for space, which can suppress stony corals in a mixed reef. Run activated carbon, keep up regular water changes, and give softies and SPS separate zones rather than interleaving them.

Starting a soft coral reef

A tank of softies is the most reliable way into the hobby and remains rewarding long after you could keep anything.
