Jawfish FAQs

What substrate does a jawfish need?
Jawfish need a sufficiently deep substrate made from mixed sand and small rubble that allows them to construct and reinforce a stable burrow.
Do jawfish need a covered aquarium?
Yes. Jawfish can jump when startled or displaced, so a secure lid should close openings around equipment, plumbing, and cables.
What do jawfish eat?
Most accept small meaty marine foods delivered near the burrow, including enriched frozen preparations and suitable prepared items.
Can multiple jawfish live together?
It depends on species, aquarium footprint, and burrow spacing because neighboring jawfish may defend territory from one another.
How should a jawfish be acclimated?
Acclimate gradually, dim the lights, and release the fish near prepared substrate where it can establish a burrow without harassment.

Selecting a Jawfish

Choose an alert fish with clear eyes, intact skin, regular breathing, and interest in nearby movement or food. Research adult size, temperature preference, and territorial behavior because requirements vary. Check potential companions in saltwater fish, favoring peaceful species that will not repeatedly invade the burrow.

Substrate and Shelter

A jawfish needs a deep, stable bed of appropriately sized sand mixed with small shells or rubble for reinforcement. Avoid sharp pieces that could cause injury. Place major rockwork securely on the aquarium base so digging cannot undermine it. Find substrate tools, lids, and other aquarium supplies for habitat preparation.

Feeding and Compatibility

Deliver small meaty foods near the burrow entrance so the jawfish can feed without traveling far into open water. Suitable selections from fish food may include enriched frozen or prepared fare. Avoid overly aggressive feeders and provide wide spacing between burrows. Small ornamental invertebrates may face some species-dependent risk.

Acclimation and Security

Acclimate gradually, dim the lights, and release the fish beside prepared substrate rather than over exposed rock. A tight lid is essential because startled or newly introduced jawfish can jump through small gaps. Temporary hiding is common while a burrow is built. Monitor respiration, feeding, digging stability, and harassment without repeatedly disturbing its construction.
