Care & Diet Feeding, nutrition, and best practices.

Diet Type: Omnivore

Diet and Feeding: The Desjardini Sailfin Tang is primarily an herbivore, grazing continuously in nature on filamentous algae, marine plant matter, and biofilm, with some incidental detritus and small invertebrates. In captivity, it is beneficial to make the bulk of the diet high-quality marine algae such as nori, red and brown seaweed, spirulina-based flakes, and herbivore pellets formulated for tangs and surgeonfish. To ensure balanced nutrition, offer occasional supplemental foods such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped marine seafood, and enriched brine shrimp in modest amounts. Feeding with a seaweed clip or firmly attached algae sheet encourages natural foraging and keeps the fish active throughout the day. Provide small portions multiple times daily, and avoid overfeeding to maintain water quality and support long-term health.

Temperament: Semi-aggressive

The Desjardini Sailfin Tang is an active, open-water swimmer that needs ample horizontal space and strong circulation, with some rockwork for grazing and occasional retreat rather than dense hiding spots. It is generally peaceful toward non-competing tank mates but can become territorial, especially toward conspecifics and other tangs with similar body shape or feeding niche. A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended, though larger systems reduce stress and aggression; an aquascape with visual barriers and plenty of swimming room helps moderate territorial displays. In reef-safe community setups, this species usually coexists well with hardy, non-aggressive fish, but it may outcompete slower feeders if not managed carefully. Dietarily, it is primarily herbivorous to omnivorous, spending much of its time grazing on algae and biofilm, and it should receive frequent vegetable-based foods such as nori, spirulina, and quality marine algae preparations. Supplemental meaty foods can be offered in moderation, but plant matter should remain the core of the diet to support health and natural foraging behavior.

FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
How big does a Desjardini Sailfin Tang actually get in captivity, and what tank size is truly appropriate long-term?

Desjardini Sailfin Tangs can reach around 10–12 inches as adults, with a very tall, broad body and long dorsal/anal fins that need room beyond just length. A true long-term home should be at least 6 feet long, ideally 180 gallons or more, with lots of open swimming space. Smaller tanks may keep a juvenile temporarily, but these fish grow fast and become stressed, cramped, and territorial if undersized.

Why does my Desjardini Sailfin Tang constantly “flash” its sail-like fins and change color when it sees other fish?

That’s normal display behavior. Desjardini Sailfin Tangs use their tall fins and color shifts to communicate dominance, stress, or excitement, especially around other tangs and similarly shaped fish. They often darken, pale out, or flare their fins when establishing territory. If the behavior is brief and the fish is eating normally, it’s usually just social signaling, not disease.

What should I feed a Desjardini Sailfin Tang to keep it healthy and prevent head-and-lateral-line erosion?

This tang needs a largely herbivorous diet with constant access to marine algae and high-fiber greens. Best staples are dried nori, spirulina-based foods, quality herbivore pellets, and regular macroalgae. You can supplement with mysis or other meaty foods, but not as the main diet. Frequent grazing is important; poor vegetable intake and low water quality are both linked to HLLE in tangs.

Can a Desjardini Sailfin Tang be kept with other tangs, especially other Zebrasoma species?

Sometimes, but only with careful planning. Desjardini Sailfin Tangs can become very territorial toward other tangs, especially those with similar body shape or feeding style. If you want multiple tangs, introduce the Desjardini last in a large tank, avoid similar species unless the system is very large, and provide abundant swimming room, rockwork breaks, and multiple feeding stations. In smaller systems, aggression is often severe.

How do I quarantine and acclimate a Desjardini Sailfin Tang without triggering ich or stress-related issues?

Quarantine is strongly recommended because tangs are extremely prone to marine ich and other parasite outbreaks. Use a properly sized QT with PVC shelter, strong aeration, and stable salinity; provide nori early so it starts eating immediately. During acclimation, reduce light, minimize chasing, and avoid overcrowding. Desjardini Sailfin Tangs are sensitive to shipping stress, so a calm transfer and early feeding are critical for survival.

Desjardini Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma desjardinii)

The Desjardini Sailfin Tang is a majestic and highly recognizable species known for its large, disk-shaped body and dramatic, sail-like dorsal and anal fins. Its coloration features a mix of earthy browns and grays overlaid with bold vertical stripes and intricate spots, especially prominent on the fins and face. This tang is both beautiful and functional, making it a centerpiece fish in large reef and marine aquariums.

Tank Requirements

Due to its adult size and active nature, the Desjardini Sailfin Tang requires a minimum tank size of 125 gallons, with ample swimming space and plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. Strong water flow and high water quality are essential, as they are sensitive to poor conditions. Ensure your aquascape allows for both open areas and secure retreats.

Algae Grazers

Desjardini Tangs are excellent herbivores and play a valuable role in controlling nuisance algae. They constantly graze on surfaces throughout the tank, helping to manage hair algae, film algae, and other common growths. Their foraging behavior not only benefits tank cleanliness but also keeps them mentally and physically stimulated.

Diet and Feeding

Although they are primarily herbivorous, these tangs benefit from a varied diet. Offer dried seaweed (nori), spirulina-based flakes and pellets, and blanched greens like romaine or zucchini. Supplement with occasional meaty foods such as mysis or brine shrimp to ensure a complete nutritional profile. Feed multiple times daily, especially in high-activity tanks.

Tankmates and Behavior

Generally peaceful with most tankmates, Desjardini Sailfins can become territorial toward other tangs or similarly shaped fish, especially in smaller tanks. They do best either singly or introduced alongside other tangs in very large systems (200+ gallons). Despite their size and presence, they are reef-safe, posing no threat to corals or invertebrates.

With proper space and care, Desjardini Tangs become bold, interactive, and long-lived members of a marine aquarium.
