The IceCap Battery Backup v3 activates immediately upon detecting a power loss, maintaining circulation through connected DC flow pumps without any manual intervention. It is not a whole-system UPS; it is purpose-built for keeping pumps running, which is where battery backup effort is best focused.
The v3 unit outputs 12V DC at up to 2.5A and accepts up to two pump connections simultaneously. Run time is determined by how much current your pump draws — a pump pulling 0.2A will run for approximately 12.5 hours on the 2.5Ah battery, while a more demanding load will reduce that figure proportionally. For applications requiring extended coverage, two Battery Backup v3 units can be daisy-chained to double the run time on a single pump. The included charger (27V, 600mA output) keeps the internal battery topped off during normal operation.
Compatibility is broad but not universal. The v3 works with most variable-speed DC pumps rated at 24V or less, including all Maxspect Gyre models, IceCap Gyre pumps, Reef Octopus Octo Pulse pumps, and the HYDROS WaveEngine (with optional HYDROS Battery Backup Kit Adapters). It is not compatible with Reef Octopus VarioS, EcoTech, Tunze, or AI Nero pumps. Note that because the backup outputs 12V rather than the controller's regulated voltage, some pumps may not reduce speed as expected during backup operation.
The unit measures 5.75 x 5 x 3.125 inches and weighs under 4 pounds, with a form factor suited for wall mounting or placement inside an aquarium stand. For best battery longevity, operate it in an environment near 70°F and be aware that repeated discharge cycles will gradually reduce capacity over time. The battery backup carries a one-year warranty from CoralVue/IceCap against defects in materials and workmanship.
