FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
What size aquarium should I choose for a Chalk Basslet?
A 30-gallon aquarium is the recommended minimum for a single adult. Plans for a group should provide considerably more space, rockwork, and defensible territory than a single-fish setup.
Can I keep several Chalk Basslets together?
Yes, provided all specimens are obtained and introduced at the same time. Established fish tend to harass later additions, and ample rockwork and swimming room become more important as group size increases.
Is a Chalk Basslet safe with corals and ornamental shrimp?
It leaves corals and other sessile invertebrates alone, but small ornamental shrimp may be eaten, especially by larger specimens. Small crabs can also be at risk, so select crustaceans too large to be swallowed.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Chalk Basslet (Serranus tortugarum) is a colorful, compact saltwater fish prized for its attractive blend of lavender, purple, orange, and electric-blue markings. Reaching only about 3 inches as an adult, this small member of the sea bass family brings plenty of color and personality without requiring the large aquarium associated with many other serranids.
Native to the tropical Western Atlantic and Caribbean, this species occurs around reefs and areas of coral rubble, sand, and shell debris, where it often hovers in small groups while feeding on planktonic prey. In the marine aquarium, it typically spends much of its time in the open near rockwork while keeping a preferred cave or crevice close by for security.
Its manageable adult size, generally peaceful temperament, hardy nature, and excellent coral compatibility make it an appealing choice for both reef aquarium and fish-only aquarium setups. It can be kept singly, but pairs or small groups can also make an attractive display when introduced together.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore / Planktivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Western Atlantic and Caribbean
Scientific Name: Serranus tortugarum
Tank Requirements
A 30-gallon or larger established saltwater aquarium provides suitable long-term housing for a single Chalk Basslet. Provide plenty of live rock or other stable rockwork containing caves, ledges, and crevices where the fish can retreat when startled or resting.
Leave open swimming areas around the rockwork, as this species commonly hovers above the structure rather than remaining hidden throughout the day. A specialized substrate is not required, although sand or fine gravel works naturally with its reef-associated habitat.
Moderate water movement is appropriate, particularly when combined with quieter areas around caves and overhangs. A secure aquarium cover is recommended, especially during acclimation or when the fish is startled.
When keeping several individuals, additional swimming room and numerous separate hiding areas help reduce competition. Groups are best introduced at the same time rather than adding a new individual to an established group later.
Diet and Feeding
In the wild, Serranus tortugarum feeds primarily on plankton and small animal prey. In captivity, it readily accepts a varied diet of appropriately sized meaty marine foods.
Offer foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped shrimp or other marine seafood, quality frozen carnivore blends, and appropriately sized marine pellets. Variety helps provide balanced nutrition and encourages strong coloration and body condition.
Feed small portions once or twice daily, making sure quieter individuals receive food when the fish is maintained in a community or group setting.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Chalk Basslet is one of the more peaceful members of the sea bass family and generally mixes well with similarly sized community-oriented marine aquarium fish. Suitable companions include many gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, clownfish, peaceful wrasses, and other non-predatory reef fish.
It can be maintained singly, in a compatible pair, or in a small group. When keeping multiple Chalk Basslets, introducing them together is preferable because established individuals may be less accepting of newcomers.
Avoid housing this relatively small fish with large, highly aggressive, or predatory tankmates that may intimidate or consume it. Although normally peaceful toward other fish, individual behavior can vary and some territorial posturing may occur around favored hiding places.
Reef Compatibility
The Chalk Basslet does not normally damage corals and is an excellent candidate for most reef aquariums. It can generally be kept around soft corals, LPS, SPS, clams, snails, and other typical reef inhabitants without causing problems.
However, it is best considered reef safe with caution because larger individuals may prey on very small ornamental shrimp or other tiny crustaceans that can fit into their mouth. Standard-sized cleaner shrimp and similar larger invertebrates are typically less vulnerable, but extremely small shrimp should be monitored carefully.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Stable, mature aquarium conditions are more important than attempting to maintain a single exact number within these ranges. Avoid sudden changes in salinity, temperature, or other major water parameters.
Common Considerations
-
Adults reach approximately 3 inches, making a 30-gallon aquarium an appropriate minimum for long-term care.
-
Provide several caves and crevices so the fish can quickly retreat when startled or resting.
-
Multiple Chalk Basslets are best introduced to the aquarium at the same time.
-
Very small ornamental shrimp and tiny crustaceans may be viewed as food, particularly by larger adults.
-
A secure lid is recommended because startled individuals may jump from an uncovered aquarium.
