Apocyclops panamensis is a cyclopoid copepod species prized in both reef-keeping and commercial aquaculture for its small size, nutritional density, and environmental adaptability. Reef Genetics aquacultures these copepods sustainably in-house, harvesting weekly to ensure the animals arrive in peak condition with full gut content. Pre-dosing with lipid-rich phytoplankton ensures each copepod carries a meaningful payload of protein, essential fatty acids (ARA, EPA, DHA), enzymes, vitamins, and probiotics—nutritional components that are difficult to replicate with frozen or processed alternatives.
The species exhibits a characteristic mid-water "pep-pep" swimming motion that reliably triggers feeding responses in visually oriented predators. Mandarins, anthias, and small wrasses that ignore frozen food often respond immediately to live Apocyclops. The size range—nauplii at 10–20μm and adults at 40–60μm—also makes this species useful across life stages, from newly hatched marine fish fry to adult corals and clams drawing in particulate food.
Beyond direct feeding, Apocyclops panamensis serves a functional role in the tank ecosystem. As natural detritivores, they graze on excess ciliates, nuisance algae, and rotifers, contributing to microfauna balance in refugiums and display systems. Their tolerance for a wide salinity range—freshwater through full oceanic salinity (1.0263)—means they are among the more forgiving species to work with, and they colonize macroalgae beds and live rock quickly when conditions support reproduction.
Each standard 8 oz bottle ships with 100+ live adults and nauplii. To establish a reproducing population, seed near rockwork or refugium zones with pumps, skimmers, and UV sterilizers off for 10–20 minutes before and after dosing. Supplementing with phytoplankton two to three times per week and maintaining a macroalgae bed (Chaetomorpha or Caulerpa) will support long-term population stability. The bottle can also serve as the starter culture for a dedicated home copepod reactor or vessel.
