Goes well with:
Caulerpa racemosa macroalgae, commonly called Grape Caulerpa, forms bright green runners topped with bead-like branchlets. It creates dense texture, takes up dissolved nutrients as it grows, and offers surface area for pods and beneficial microbes. Unlike loose Chaeto, this Caulerpa anchors with rhizoids and can spread into rock or substrate, so it requires deliberate placement, frequent thinning, and responsible disposal.

Why grow Caulerpa Racemosa?
- Distinct grape-like form for planted refugiums and dedicated macroalgae displays.
- Takes up nitrate and phosphate during growth; harvesting physically exports those nutrients.
- Provides complex cover for copepods, amphipods, and other small refugium life.
- Can provide supplemental grazing for tangs and rabbitfish, although individual fish preferences vary.
Lighting, flow, and nutrients
Use strong white or full-spectrum refugium lighting and moderate-to-high flow that reaches through the patch without tearing it loose. Maintain measurable nitrate and phosphate rather than driving either nutrient abruptly to zero. Stable salinity and temperature matter. Trace or iron supplementation should be based on the whole system and product directions, never used as a substitute for testing.
Refugium or display tank?
A contained refugium is the safest placement because Racemosa sends creeping stolons and can regrow from small fragments. In a display, keep it on an isolated, removable substrate and away from coral rockwork, pumps, and overflows. Rhizoids can enter pores and make complete removal difficult. Herbivorous fish may control visible growth, but grazing is not a reliable containment plan.
Pruning and nutrient export
Nutrient export occurs only when growth leaves the aquarium. Thin the patch regularly, often weekly under fast growth, and remove complete runners or fronds near their base rather than shredding the colony in place. Leave enough healthy growth to recover. Catch every fragment with a net or mechanical filter, because broken pieces can establish elsewhere in the system.
Troubleshooting and sexual reproduction
All Caulerpa can enter a sexual phase and die back, releasing stored material into the water. Racemosa deserves especially close observation. Warning signs can include paling or translucent tissue, patchy discoloration, fine projections, and sudden cloudiness. Remove suspect growth immediately, run fresh mechanical filtration, support oxygenation and skimming, and test water. Regular thinning and a stable photoperiod reduce risk but do not eliminate it.
How Caulerpa Racemosa compares
Caulerpa Prolifera grows flat blade-like fronds from a runner and creates a seagrass-style meadow. Racemosa is denser and more three-dimensional, with the signature grape form. Pom Pom Gracilaria is a red ornamental macroalgae that does not root into substrate, making it easier to relocate when a display needs a less persistent option.
Portion sizes, acclimation, and responsible ownership
Choose a Golf Ball portion measuring roughly 2–3 inches or a Soft Ball portion around 5 inches. Temperature-acclimate the sealed bag, rinse in discarded tank water, inspect for unwanted hitchhikers, and start under reduced light before increasing intensity. Never release Caulerpa or aquarium water into a waterway. Check local law before ordering: California prohibits possession, sale, import, transport, and transfer of live Caulerpa.

Caulerpa Racemosa Macroalgae FAQs
What is Caulerpa racemosa, or Grape Caulerpa?
Caulerpa racemosa is a green marine macroalgae with creeping stolons and upright branches covered in round, grape-like structures. Reef keepers use it in refugiums and controlled macroalgae displays for texture, pod habitat, and nutrient uptake. It is not a true plant and does not have roots; rhizoids anchor it to sand, rubble, or porous rock.
How fast does Caulerpa Racemosa grow?
Growth ranges from moderate to very fast depending on light, flow, nitrate, phosphate, trace availability, and available space. Under favorable conditions, runners can spread quickly through substrate and rock. Inspect the patch weekly and harvest before it becomes crowded. Removing growth is the step that permanently exports the nitrate and phosphate held in its tissue.
Can Grape Caulerpa go sexual in an aquarium?
Yes. Caulerpa can convert much of its tissue into reproductive cells, release them, and die back. The water may become cloudy while stored nutrients return to the system. Watch for paling, translucent areas, unusual fine projections, or patchy tissue. Remove suspect growth promptly. Stable conditions, regular thinning, and a consistent photoperiod reduce risk but cannot guarantee prevention.
Where should I place Caulerpa Racemosa?
A contained, well-lit refugium is the most manageable location. Racemosa anchors with rhizoids, spreads by runners, and can regenerate from fragments, making removal from display rock difficult. If used decoratively, place it on an isolated removable substrate with space from corals and pump intakes. Do not rely on tangs or rabbitfish as the only containment method.
Will tangs and rabbitfish eat Grape Caulerpa?
Many tangs, rabbitfish, and other herbivores may graze it, but preferences vary by individual fish. Some animals ignore Caulerpa, while others consume new growth rapidly. Grow the main culture where it is protected if you want dependable nutrient export. Offer only clean harvested pieces and use macroalgae as supplemental forage alongside a balanced marine diet.
Is Caulerpa Racemosa legal, and how should I dispose of it?
Rules vary by location. California prohibits possession, sale, import, transport, transfer, and live release of every Caulerpa species, so check local regulations before ordering. Never flush live algae or aquarium water, and never release it outdoors. A responsible disposal method is to seal and freeze removed material before placing it in household trash, following local guidance.
