Euphyllia Corals

What are Euphyllia corals?

Euphyllia is a genus of large polyp stony corals built around long, fleshy tentacles that remain extended day and night and drift continuously in gentle current. That constant motion is the reason the genus anchors so many mixed reefs: no other stony coral group provides the same sense of movement. All Euphyllia build a calcium carbonate skeleton in either a fused wall form or a branching form, and all of them are considered approachable LPS corals once a tank has matured.

Torch, hammer, and frogspawn compared

Telling the three apart comes down to the shape of the tentacle tip:

• Torch coral (Euphyllia glabrescens) — long, straight tentacles ending in a single rounded tip, always on a branching skeleton. The most collectible and the most aggressive of the three.
• Hammer coral (Euphyllia ancora and E. parancora) — tips flattened into a hammer or anchor shape. Available in both wall and branching forms, and the most forgiving entry point.
• Frogspawn coral (Euphyllia divisa and E. paradivisa) — rounded tips branched into clusters resembling frog eggs. Hardy, fast to branch, and the best value of the three.

Euphyllia care: light, flow, and stability

All three species want the same conditions: moderate light, gentle to moderate indirect flow, and above all stability. Euphyllia react poorly to swings in alkalinity, calcium, and salinity, often by retracting for days, so consistency matters more than hitting any particular number. Track parameters with dependable water testing equipment and review your reef lighting before repositioning a colony. Small meaty foods once or twice a week speed up head production noticeably.

Planning a Euphyllia garden

A Euphyllia garden, a shelf given over entirely to torch, hammer, and frogspawn, is one of the most striking things you can build in a reef tank, but it needs planning. Mount colonies on separate plugs or rubble so you can reposition them as they grow, leave a few inches between different species, and keep the whole group well away from chalices and other long-sweeper corals. Give the garden gentle, turbulent flow rather than a direct stream, and accept that you will be moving pieces every few months as heads multiply.
