FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
Will this wrasse harm my corals or invertebrates?
No. It is reef safe and behaves as a plankton-picker, showing no interest in nipping corals, clams, or other sessile invertebrates.
How many can I keep together, and how should I introduce them?
Keep a single male with one or more females as a harem, or a mated pair, and add the females before or alongside the male to reduce aggression. A second male is only advisable in systems of 100 gallons or more.
Does this fish need a lid on the tank?
Yes. A secure, tight-fitting lid is mandatory because this species jumps readily, especially when startled and fleeing upward.

The Multicolor Fairy Wrasse, Cirrhilabrus lubbocki, is a small, brilliantly colored marine aquarium fish valued for its active personality, manageable adult size, and excellent reef compatibility. Also known as Lubbock’s Fairy Wrasse, this species is highly variable in appearance, with adults displaying combinations of red, pink, purple, yellow, orange, and electric blue. Males typically develop the strongest coloration, often featuring a yellow dorsal region or fin with contrasting blue to violet markings across a reddish body.
Native to the Western Central Pacific, particularly the Philippines and Sulawesi, Indonesia, this species inhabits coral and rubble reef environments where groups feed on zooplankton above the reef. In the aquarium, it spends much of the day swimming through open water before retreating into rockwork when frightened or at night.
Reaching only about 3 inches as an adult, the Multicolor Fairy Wrasse is an excellent choice for established reef aquariums where a colorful, active fish is desired without significant risk to corals or ornamental invertebrates. Its relatively peaceful temperament also makes it suitable for many mixed marine communities when housed with compatible tankmates.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Planktivore / Carnivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Western Central Pacific – Philippines and Sulawesi, Indonesia
Scientific Name: Cirrhilabrus lubbocki
Tank Requirements
Provide an established aquarium with a combination of open swimming space and substantial rockwork containing caves, shaded areas, and narrow retreats. Fairy wrasses spend much of the day swimming in the water column but depend on secure reef structure for shelter when resting or frightened.
A deep sand bed is not required. Unlike sand-burying wrasses such as many Halichoeres species, Cirrhilabrus wrasses generally shelter within rockwork at night.
Moderate to strong water circulation and good oxygenation are appropriate, provided calmer areas remain available around the rockwork.
A tightly fitted lid or fine mesh cover is essential. Fairy wrasses are exceptionally capable jumpers and can escape through small openings around plumbing, cords, and overflow boxes.
Diet and Feeding
The Multicolor Fairy Wrasse is primarily a planktivore that naturally feeds on zooplankton in the water column.
In captivity, provide a varied diet of finely chopped mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, Cyclops, small frozen plankton blends, finely chopped marine seafood, and quality marine pellets or flakes.
Because fairy wrasses are active fish with relatively high metabolisms, two to three small meals per day are beneficial when practical. Foods should be appropriately sized for the fish’s relatively small mouth.
Once acclimated, this species is usually an enthusiastic feeder and commonly learns to accept a broad range of prepared marine foods.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Multicolor Fairy Wrasse is generally peaceful and works well in community reef aquariums. Suitable tankmates include clownfish, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, firefish, anthias, peaceful tangs, and many other reef-compatible species.
Some territorial behavior can occur toward other fairy wrasses, particularly between males or similarly colored species. Multiple fairy wrasses are best attempted in larger aquariums with extensive rockwork and careful species selection.
Males may intensify their coloration and display toward females or other wrasses, particularly during courtship. This flashing behavior is normal and can make mature males especially impressive under reef lighting.
Avoid aggressive wrasses and highly territorial fish that may continually chase or intimidate this relatively peaceful species.
Reef Compatibility
The Multicolor Fairy Wrasse is considered reef safe.
It does not normally consume SPS corals, LPS corals, soft corals, clams, snails, crabs, or established ornamental shrimp. Its natural feeding behavior is focused primarily on small planktonic organisms in the water column rather than benthic reef invertebrates.
This combination of coral safety, small adult size, and peaceful behavior makes Cirrhilabrus lubbocki particularly well suited to mixed reef aquariums.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Maintain stable temperature, salinity, and overall water quality. Consistency is more important than attempting to maintain one exact value within these ranges.
Common Considerations
-
A tightly fitted lid is essential because fairy wrasses are exceptionally capable jumpers.
-
Adult coloration is highly variable, and males generally develop more intense colors than females.
-
Reaches only about 3 inches but remains an active open-water swimmer that benefits from adequate aquarium length.
-
Does not require a deep sand bed and normally retreats into rockwork for nighttime shelter.
-
Use caution when combining multiple male fairy wrasses, particularly similarly colored or closely related species.
