FAQs Answers to the most common questions.

What tank size and layout does a Midas Blenny need?

Provide at least 30 gallons with plentiful live rock offering tight shelter holes and perches, open midwater swimming room, and good circulation. A securely fitted lid is essential because this species jumps.

Is the Midas Blenny primarily an algae eater?

No. Unlike many related blennies, it feeds chiefly on plankton in nature, so small meaty planktonic foods should lead the diet alongside suitable vegetable-based preparations offered two or three times daily.

Is it suitable for a peaceful reef community?

Yes, it is regarded as peaceful and reef compatible. Cramped conditions can bring out territorial behavior, and small planktivores such as firefish, gobies, and similar-shaped blennies may be harassed.

Description
This is not a WYSIWYG fish. You will receive a similar fish, but coloration and pattern may vary.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.

The Midas Blenny is a vibrant, personable saltwater fish known for its golden-yellow to orange coloration, vivid blue-rimmed eyes, and long, streamlined body. Unlike many bottom-oriented blennies, this species spends a surprising amount of time swimming in open water, often weaving among other reef fish before retreating into a favorite hole or crevice in the rockwork.

Ecsenius midas is native to the Indo-Pacific and Red Sea, where it inhabits coral and rocky reef environments. In nature, it is frequently associated with groups of anthias and other planktivorous fish, sometimes swimming among them while feeding on zooplankton in the water column. Its brilliant coloration, expressive behavior, and manageable adult size make it a popular choice for reef aquariums and peaceful fish-only marine systems.

This species is generally hardy once established and adapts well to prepared foods. It is considered reef safe and is usually peaceful with unrelated tankmates, though it may defend its preferred cave or show aggression toward similar-looking blennies.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful / Semi-aggressive
Diet: Omnivore / Planktivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Indo-Pacific and Red Sea
Scientific Name: Ecsenius midas

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature marine aquarium with plenty of live rock containing holes, caves, and narrow crevices. The Midas Blenny typically selects a small opening as a home base and may spend time resting with only its head visible.

Leave ample open swimming space around the rockwork. This species is more active in the water column than many other blennies and benefits from a layout that combines secure shelter with unobstructed swimming room.

Moderate water movement, good oxygenation, and stable water quality are ideal. A secure lid or mesh cover is strongly recommended because blennies can jump when startled, particularly during acclimation.

Diet and Feeding

The Midas Blenny is an omnivorous planktivore that feeds heavily on zooplankton and small drifting food items in nature.

Offer a varied diet of enriched mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine seafood, quality frozen marine blends, and appropriately sized pellets or flakes. Foods containing some marine algae or spirulina can also provide useful dietary variety.

Feed small portions once or twice daily. Established specimens are generally enthusiastic feeders and often learn quickly to take food from the water column.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Midas Blenny is generally peaceful and works well in community reef aquariums with clownfish, cardinalfish, gobies, fairy wrasses, anthias, tangs, and other non-aggressive marine fish.

It may become territorial around its chosen cave and can show aggression toward similar-looking blennies or other elongated fish occupying the same area. Housing multiple Ecsenius blennies together should therefore be approached cautiously.

Avoid highly aggressive tankmates that may prevent the blenny from feeding or repeatedly force it from its shelter.

Reef Compatibility

The Midas Blenny is considered reef safe.

It does not normally damage corals, clams, shrimp, snails, or other established ornamental invertebrates. Its feeding behavior is primarily focused on planktonic foods in the water column rather than coral tissue.

This makes it well suited to mixed reefs, SPS systems, LPS aquariums, and soft coral displays.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Maintain stable salinity and consistently good water quality. Stability is more important than targeting one exact number within these ranges.

Common Considerations

  • Needs a secure cave: Provide narrow holes and crevices where the blenny can establish a permanent retreat.
  • Active swimmer: This species uses more open water than many other blennies and benefits from adequate swimming space.
  • Jumping risk: A secure lid or mesh cover is strongly recommended.
  • Can be territorial with similar fish: Use caution with other blennies or similarly shaped species.
  • Excellent reef compatibility: Corals and established ornamental invertebrates are generally ignored.
