Description

The juvenile Harlequin Tusk is a striking young saltwater fish that develops into one of the most recognizable wrasses in the marine aquarium hobby. Juveniles show a more subdued version of the adult pattern, with brownish to orange banding, contrasting pale bars, and prominent dark eyespots in the dorsal and anal fins. As the fish matures, these juvenile markings gradually give way to the bold orange, blue, white, and black patterning and vivid blue teeth associated with adult Harlequin Tusks.

Choerodon fasciatus is a reef-associated wrasse native to the western Pacific, with a distribution extending from the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan southward to New Caledonia and Queensland, Australia. Adults occur primarily around seaward reefs, where they feed on mollusks, crustaceans, worms, and other benthic invertebrates. Juveniles may initially be shy in the aquarium, but they typically become increasingly confident as they settle in and mature.

Although offered here as a juvenile, this species must be housed according to its substantial adult size. The Harlequin Tusk is best suited to a large fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock aquarium, although it can also be maintained in certain coral systems where predation on ornamental invertebrates is acceptable.

Quick Care Guide

Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive / Predatory
Diet: Carnivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Western Pacific, including southern Japan, Taiwan, New Caledonia, and eastern Australia
Scientific Name: Choerodon fasciatus

Tank Requirements

Provide a spacious marine aquarium with generous open swimming room and substantial rockwork arranged into caves, ledges, and secure hiding areas. Juveniles may spend considerable time close to shelter when first introduced, so several retreat options can help them acclimate comfortably.

Rockwork should be stable and securely positioned. Harlequin Tusks actively investigate the substrate and crevices while searching for food and may disturb loose sand or unsecured décor as they grow.

A secure aquarium lid is strongly recommended because this species is capable of jumping when startled. Strong filtration, good oxygenation, and efficient protein skimming are also important as the fish matures into a larger carnivore with a correspondingly greater bioload.

Diet and Feeding

The Harlequin Tusk is a carnivore whose natural diet includes mollusks, crustaceans, worms, and other reef invertebrates. Juveniles should be offered a varied assortment of appropriately sized, protein-rich marine foods.

Good choices include enriched mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, chopped shrimp, krill, clam, mussel, squid, and quality frozen carnivore blends. Appropriately sized marine pellets can also be incorporated once the fish readily accepts prepared foods.

Young specimens benefit from one to two feedings per day, with portions adjusted to maintain healthy body condition. As the fish grows, gradually increase food size and variety rather than relying exclusively on small frozen foods.

Temperament and Tankmates

Juvenile Harlequin Tusks are often relatively shy when first introduced and may be less assertive than mature specimens. With time, however, they typically become confident, active fish and can develop the semi-aggressive behavior characteristic of the species.

Choose tankmates with the adult Harlequin Tusk in mind. Suitable companions generally include medium to large tangs, angelfish, triggerfish, and other robust marine fish that are not small enough to be considered prey.

Avoid very small, timid, or delicate tankmates. It is generally best to keep only one Harlequin Tusk per aquarium unless the system is exceptionally large and specifically designed for multiple large wrasses.

Reef Compatibility

The Harlequin Tusk is reef safe with caution.

It does not typically consume coral tissue, making it possible to maintain the species in certain coral aquariums. However, its natural diet includes crustaceans, mollusks, and other invertebrates, and this predatory instinct becomes increasingly important as the fish grows.

Ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, and other vulnerable invertebrates may eventually be hunted and eaten. Juveniles should not be assumed safe simply because they initially ignore these animals.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Maintain stable, well-oxygenated water and avoid rapid changes in salinity, temperature, or pH. Consistent water quality is more important than targeting one exact value within these ranges.

Common Considerations

  • Plan for the adult fish: Juvenile size does not reduce the long-term space requirements of this species; provide at least a 125-gallon aquarium.
  • Coloration changes with maturity: Juvenile markings gradually develop into the much bolder orange, blue, white, and black adult pattern.
  • May initially be shy: New juveniles often spend more time near rockwork before becoming confident and active.
  • Invertebrates are at risk: Shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, and other mobile invertebrates may become prey as the fish grows.
  • Secure lid recommended: Harlequin Tusks can jump when frightened or startled.
FAQs Common questions about Harlequin Tusk - Juvenile

What minimum aquarium size should I plan for?

Plan on at least 125 gallons for long-term housing. Alternative references list 60, 100, or 110 gallons, but the larger figure better accommodates a 12-inch adult and its constant swimming.

Can a Harlequin Tusk live in a reef aquarium?

It can, with caution, because it generally leaves corals and sessile invertebrates alone. However, it is likely to eat shrimp, crabs, snails, and other mobile invertebrates, and large individuals may take small fish.

What should I check before buying one?

Choose an actively swimming specimen with clear, intact fins and confirm that it is accepting food. Specimens in the 3-to-5-inch range are often the best bet, as very small fish can be fragile and larger ones sometimes acclimate less readily.
