Harlequin Tusk - Juvenile

The juvenile Harlequin Tusk, Choerodon fasciatus, is a spectacular saltwater fish recognized for its alternating orange-red, white, blue, and dark vertical bands. Juveniles display particularly crisp contrasting stripes and prominent eyespots along the dorsal and anal fins, with their coloration becoming richer and more defined as they mature. One of the species’ most distinctive features is its prominent blue canine teeth, which eventually develop into formidable tools for crushing hard-shelled prey.

Native to the Western Pacific, the Harlequin Tusk inhabits seaward coral reefs from the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan south through New Caledonia and Queensland, Australia. Although juveniles may initially appear shy, they typically become confident, active aquarium residents once established. Their dramatic coloration, intelligent behavior, and substantial adult presence make them outstanding centerpiece fish for large fish-only aquariums and carefully planned reef aquariums.

Tank Requirements

The Harlequin Tusk requires a spacious marine aquarium with substantial rockwork and generous open swimming room. Although this offering is a juvenile, adults can reach approximately 12 inches and require a 125-gallon or larger aquarium for appropriate long-term housing.

Provide sturdy caves, overhangs, and protected crevices where the fish can retreat when resting or frightened. Juveniles can be somewhat reserved during acclimation and often appreciate immediate access to secure shelter.

Leave ample open space around the rockwork for swimming and feeding. Moderate water movement, good oxygenation, efficient filtration, and stable water quality are ideal. A secure aquarium cover is recommended, as startled specimens are capable of jumping.

A specialized sand bed is not required, as Harlequin Tusks normally shelter within reef structure rather than burying themselves in the substrate.

Diet and Feeding

The Harlequin Tusk is a carnivore that naturally feeds on mollusks, crustaceans, worms, echinoderms, and other reef invertebrates.

Offer a varied captive diet including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, chopped shrimp, clam, mussel, squid, krill, and other quality marine seafood. High-quality carnivore pellets and frozen marine blends can also be incorporated once readily accepted.

As the fish grows, appropriately sized shell-on shrimp, clam, or mussel can provide enrichment and encourage natural crushing behavior with its powerful teeth.

Juveniles benefit from two or more smaller meals per day, while established adults can typically be maintained on one to two substantial feedings depending on body condition and aquarium stocking.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Harlequin Tusk is semi-aggressive but is often less combative than its formidable teeth suggest. Juveniles may initially be shy, while mature specimens generally become considerably bolder and more confident.

Suitable tankmates include tangs, larger angelfish, rabbitfish, robust wrasses, moderately assertive triggerfish, and other appropriately sized marine fish. Very small fish and extremely timid species are less appropriate companions for a mature specimen.

Keeping more than one Harlequin Tusk in a typical home aquarium is not recommended. Adults can become territorial toward similar fish, and a single specimen generally makes the most predictable centerpiece.

Reef Compatibility

The Harlequin Tusk is reef safe with caution. Healthy corals are generally not targeted, making the species compatible with many coral-dominated displays.

Ornamental invertebrates are at considerable risk. Shrimp, crabs, snails, hermit crabs, worms, small starfish, and other crustaceans or mollusks may be hunted and eaten as the fish matures.

For this reason, the species is best suited to reef aquariums where coral compatibility is more important than preserving a traditional cleanup crew or valuable ornamental invertebrates.
