Why does my Green Hairy Mushroom inflate like a balloon and “walk” across the rock?
Rhodactis indosinensis can trap water to balloon up and detach slightly, then creep toward preferred light and flow. This often follows a parameter swing, shading by neighbors, or a major spectrum change. It may also precede splitting. Stabilize salinity and alkalinity, reduce abrupt lighting shifts, and give moderate, indirect flow so it settles instead of roaming into stinging corals.
What causes color shifts or “bounce” bubbles on this mushroom?
Changes in spectrum, nutrients, and PAR drive pigments and vesicle formation. Higher blue/violet with moderate PAR often deepens greens; excessive intensity can wash color or cause retraction. Elevated nutrients may encourage bubbly vesicles, but too dirty can brown it out. Aim for stable nitrates 5–15 ppm, phosphates 0.03–0.1 ppm, gradual light adjustments, and periodic small feedings to sustain color without bleaching.
Can it harm tank mates or capture fish?
Yes. Large Rhodactis can irritate or overgrow nearby LPS and SPS, and hungry specimens may trap tiny gobies or ornamental shrimp. Keep a few inches of space, run fresh carbon for chemical byproducts, and avoid placing delicate sticks downhill in flow. Feed small meaty bits occasionally so it’s less predatory, and consider isolating it on a separate rock to curb encroachment.
How do I handle sudden “melting” or rapid tissue loss?
Immediately siphon decaying tissue, increase gentle flow, and run fresh carbon. Perform a small water change and verify salinity stability. A short, dilute iodine dip can help with bacterial load; avoid harsh coral dips. If only part is affected, trim away necrotic areas with sterile tools. Reduce light intensity temporarily and offer very light feedings after visible recovery begins.
