Dwarf Flame Angelfish

The Dwarf Flame Angelfish is one of the most brilliantly colored saltwater fish available for the home aquarium. Its intense orange-red body is marked by bold vertical black bars, while electric-blue and violet accents edge the rear dorsal and anal fins. Individual coloration varies by collection region, giving each specimen a distinctive balance of red, orange, yellow, and black.

Native to the tropical Pacific, Centropyge loriculus inhabits clear lagoons and seaward reefs, remaining close to coral growth, rocky shelter, and grazing surfaces. It occurs across the western and central Pacific, including the Coral Sea and northern Great Barrier Reef. The fish is commonly listed in the aquarium trade as Centropyge loricula, although current taxonomic references accept Centropyge loriculus. 

Compact but confident, this dwarf marine angelfish makes an exceptional centerpiece for a mature reef aquarium or fish-only aquarium. It adapts well to established systems with abundant rockwork, but its semi-aggressive temperament and potential to nip corals mean livestock combinations should be selected carefully.

Adults may reach approximately 6 inches and require adequate territory, grazing surfaces, and swimming room despite their designation as dwarf angelfish. 

Tank Requirements

Provide a mature aquarium with generous live rock arranged into caves, arches, crevices, and shaded retreats. The Flame Angelfish naturally remains close to shelter and will spend much of the day moving through rockwork while grazing on algae and other material growing across reef surfaces. 

Leave open swimming lanes around the rock structure rather than filling the entire aquarium with a solid wall of rock. Moderate to strong, well-dispersed water movement, excellent oxygenation, dependable filtration, and stable water quality are recommended.

The substrate type is not critical, although sand or fine gravel creates a natural presentation. A secure aquarium lid is advisable, particularly during acclimation. Introduce the fish only after the aquarium has developed mature rockwork and natural grazing opportunities.

Diet and Feeding

The Dwarf Flame Angelfish is an omnivore with a strong natural preference for algae. Offer a varied diet that includes spirulina, marine algae sheets, vegetable-rich flakes or pellets, quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and balanced frozen marine blends. 

Feed two or three small meals daily when possible. An established aquarium with algae-covered live rock allows the fish to graze between scheduled feedings and supports its natural activity throughout the day.

A varied, frequently offered diet is especially important in reef aquariums. Adequate feeding may reduce unwanted investigation of corals, although it cannot guarantee that an individual fish will remain completely coral-safe.

Temperament and Tankmates

The Flame Angelfish is bold, active, and semi-aggressive. It usually coexists well with dissimilar community fish but may defend its rockwork against newly introduced tankmates, peaceful species, or other dwarf angelfish.

Keeping a single specimen is the safest choice for most aquariums. A pair or small social group should only be attempted in a substantially larger system by aquarists familiar with managing dwarf angelfish aggression. Wild individuals may form harems, but limited aquarium territory can intensify conflict. 

Suitable tankmates include clownfish, moderately assertive wrasses, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, tangs, rabbitfish, and other fish that will not bully or be easily intimidated by the angelfish. Avoid combining it with similarly colored or similarly shaped dwarf angels unless the aquarium provides extensive space and visual separation. In peaceful communities, introducing the Flame Angelfish after more reserved species can help limit territorial behavior. 

Reef Compatibility

The Dwarf Flame Angelfish is reef safe with caution. Many specimens live successfully in coral displays, but individual behavior varies considerably. Some may nip at large-polyp stony corals, soft coral polyps, zoanthids, sessile invertebrates, or clam mantles.

Ornamental shrimp, crabs, and snails are generally at lower risk than corals and clams, but complete compatibility cannot be guaranteed. Observe new specimens closely and be prepared to remove the fish if persistent picking causes coral retraction or tissue damage.
