Captive-Bred Banggai Cardinalfish

The Captive-Bred Banggai Cardinalfish is an elegant saltwater fish with a metallic silver body, three bold black vertical bands, and delicate white spotting across its elongated fins. Tall dorsal spines, trailing pelvic fins, and a deeply forked tail create a distinctive silhouette that looks especially dramatic beneath reef aquarium lighting.

Pterapogon kauderni is naturally restricted to shallow coastal habitats around the Banggai Archipelago of Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Wild fish hover near seagrass, coral structures, anemones, and long-spined sea urchins, retreating into protective cover when threatened. Adults reach approximately 3.4 inches in total length. 

Captive-bred specimens are the preferred choice for marine aquariums because they support established aquaculture rather than direct collection from the species’ limited wild range. Banggai Cardinalfish reproduce successfully in captivity, while wild populations remain listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and endangered by the IUCN.

The species reaches approximately 3.4 inches and is commonly maintained in aquariums of 30 gallons or larger. 

Tank Requirements

Provide a stable, established aquarium with live rock arranged into caves, ledges, overhangs, and sheltered hovering areas. Banggai Cardinalfish are not constant open-water swimmers and often remain close to a preferred structure while watching for passing food.

Leave some open space through the middle of the aquarium, but include several visual barriers and protected retreats. Branching rockwork or other complex structures can help replicate the shelter naturally provided by coral colonies, anemones, seagrass, and long-spined sea urchins. A live urchin or host anemone is not required. 

A sand or fine-gravel substrate is suitable, although there is no specialized substrate requirement. Gentle to moderate, well-distributed water movement works best, with calmer areas where the fish can hover without continually fighting strong flow. Use a fitted lid or mesh cover as a precaution against jumping when startled.

Diet and Feeding

The Banggai Cardinalfish is a carnivorous planktivore that naturally consumes small planktonic and bottom-dwelling crustaceans. Offer appropriately sized foods that drift slowly through the water column, allowing the fish to feed from its preferred hovering position. 

Suitable foods include mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, calanus, finely chopped krill, shrimp or clam, frozen marine carnivore blends, and small slow-sinking pellets. Captive-bred specimens generally adapt well to a varied prepared diet, but individuals should still be observed to confirm they are receiving enough food. 

Feed one or two small portions daily. An early morning or evening feeding can complement the species’ natural tendency to feed during lower-light periods. Avoid housing it with excessively fast or aggressive feeders that consume all available food before the cardinalfish can respond.

Temperament and Tankmates

This species is peaceful toward most unrelated marine fish and is well suited to calm community aquariums. Appropriate tankmates include clownfish, gobies, blennies, firefish, peaceful wrasses, assessors, and other non-predatory species that will not intimidate it at feeding time.

Keep a single specimen or a confirmed compatible pair in most aquariums. Juveniles may appear comfortable in groups, but mature fish can become territorial toward their own species, particularly after a breeding pair forms. Groups should only be attempted in substantially larger aquariums with numerous separated retreats and careful observation. 

Banggai Cardinalfish are paternal mouthbrooders. After spawning, the male carries the developing eggs and young in his mouth and may reduce or stop feeding during the brooding period. 

Reef Compatibility

The Captive-Bred Banggai Cardinalfish is reef safe. It does not normally damage healthy stony corals, soft corals, zoanthids, anemones, clams, snails, or other sessile reef inhabitants.

Established ornamental shrimp are generally compatible, although very small shrimp, fish fry, copepods, amphipods, and other tiny crustaceans may be consumed as natural prey. Its calm hovering behavior makes it particularly suitable for coral-focused reef aquarium displays.
