The Blue Hippo Tang, Paracanthurus hepatus, is one of the most recognizable marine aquarium fish, instantly distinguished by its electric blue body, bold black palette-shaped markings, and bright yellow tail. Its vivid coloration and constant movement create an eye-catching display in large reef aquariums and fish-only marine aquariums alike.
Native to tropical reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific, this active surgeonfish is commonly associated with clear, current-swept reef slopes and outer reef habitats. Blue Hippo Tangs spend much of their time swimming through open water and investigating rockwork for food. While juveniles frequently shelter closely among branching corals, adults require substantial swimming room and a spacious, well-established aquarium.
Although generally compatible with many community species, the Blue Hippo Tang can become territorial toward other tangs and similarly shaped fish. With adequate space, excellent water quality, and a varied diet, it makes a vibrant centerpiece for a large marine aquarium.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Omnivore / Planktivore
Reef Safe: Yes
Region: Indo-Pacific – East Africa to the central Pacific, including southern Japan and the Great Barrier Reef
Scientific Name: Paracanthurus hepatus
Tank Requirements
A long, spacious aquarium with extensive open swimming room is essential for this active species. Blue Hippo Tangs can reach approximately 12 inches and spend much of the day moving through the water column, making horizontal swimming space particularly important.
Provide mature live rock arranged with caves, crevices, and sheltered areas where the fish can retreat when resting or startled. At the same time, avoid overcrowding the aquarium with rockwork that significantly reduces swimming room.
Moderate to strong water movement, high oxygenation, efficient filtration, and stable water quality are recommended. A secure aquarium lid is also beneficial, particularly during acclimation, as startled fish may jump.
Diet and Feeding
In the wild, Paracanthurus hepatus feeds heavily on zooplankton while also consuming some algae. In the aquarium, it should receive a varied diet containing both protein-rich marine foods and vegetable matter.
Offer enriched mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, quality frozen marine blends, finely chopped seafood, and appropriately sized marine pellets. Marine algae sheets such as nori should also be offered regularly to provide additional plant material and dietary variety.
Feed two to three smaller meals per day when possible. A varied, nutrient-rich diet is particularly important for maintaining strong body condition and coloration.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Blue Hippo Tang is generally peaceful toward unrelated marine fish but can become territorial with other surgeonfish, especially as it matures. Aggression is most likely toward tangs with similar body shapes, feeding habits, or swimming territories.
Suitable tankmates include clownfish, wrasses, anthias, gobies, blennies, dwarf and larger angelfish, and many other appropriately sized community marine fish. When keeping multiple tangs, provide substantial aquarium space, abundant feeding opportunities, and visual breaks within the aquascape.
This species is usually best kept as a single Blue Hippo Tang unless the aquarium is exceptionally large and specifically planned for multiple surgeonfish.
Reef Compatibility
The Blue Hippo Tang is considered reef safe and does not normally damage corals, clams, or ornamental invertebrates. Its constant swimming activity and bold coloration make it particularly attractive in large mixed reef displays.
It may graze naturally occurring algae from rockwork and other hard surfaces, but it should not be relied upon as the aquarium's primary algae-control fish. A complete prepared diet remains essential.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Consistent, stable water conditions are more important than repeatedly adjusting the aquarium to achieve an exact value. Maintain strong filtration, good oxygenation, and low accumulation of dissolved waste.
Common Considerations
-
Adults can reach approximately 12 inches and require substantial open swimming space.
-
May become territorial toward other tangs and similarly shaped surgeonfish.
-
Stable water quality, strong oxygenation, and a varied diet are important for long-term success.
-
Provide caves and sheltered rockwork where the fish can retreat when stressed or resting.
-
Like other surgeonfish, it has a sharp defensive spine near the base of the tail and should be handled carefully.
