FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
How large an aquarium does an adult need?
Plan on a minimum of 70 gallons for a single adult. This active fish approaches 9 inches and needs both extensive rockwork and open swimming room.
Is the Longnose Butterflyfish safe for a reef aquarium?
Only with caution, since it may nip corals and can consume tube worms, clam mantles, small crustaceans, and other sessile invertebrates. Individual behavior and feeding condition affect the risk, so coral tolerance does not imply general invertebrate safety.
Can more than one be kept together?
Keep a single individual unless a compatible male-female pair is available, as conspecifics and other Forcipiger species commonly trigger territorial disputes in closed systems.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish, Forcipiger flavissimus, is an unmistakable saltwater fish prized for its brilliant lemon-yellow body and exceptionally elongated, forceps-like snout. A sharply contrasting black upper head, silvery-white lower face, and dark eyespot near the rear of the anal fin complete its distinctive appearance. Its specialized snout allows it to probe deep into reef crevices for small prey that many other marine aquarium fish cannot reach.
Native to an exceptionally broad tropical range, this species occurs from the Red Sea and East Africa across the Indo-Pacific to Hawaii and Easter Island, as well as portions of the eastern Pacific. It inhabits exposed seaward reefs and protected lagoon reefs, where adults are often encountered in pairs while searching coral and rockwork for worms, small crustaceans, hydroids, echinoderm tube feet, and other invertebrate foods.
Reaching approximately 8.5 inches as an adult, the Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish makes an elegant centerpiece for a spacious fish-only aquarium and can also be considered for carefully planned reef aquariums with caution. Compared with strongly corallivorous butterflyfish, it is less dependent on coral tissue, but ornamental invertebrates and some sessile animals may still be investigated or consumed.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Carnivore / Invertivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Red Sea, Indo-Pacific, and Eastern Pacific
Scientific Name: Forcipiger flavissimus
Tank Requirements
Provide a mature marine aquarium with generous open swimming space and substantial established rockwork. Caves, overhangs, crevices, and branching structures allow the fish to retreat when necessary while also providing the complex surfaces it naturally explores for food.
The aquascape should remain open enough for comfortable cruising, particularly as the fish approaches its adult size. Mature live rock is especially valuable because it supports natural populations of small organisms and encourages normal foraging behavior.
Moderate to strong water movement, excellent oxygenation, efficient filtration, and stable water quality are recommended. A secure aquarium cover is advisable, particularly during acclimation when a startled specimen may make sudden movements toward the surface.
Diet and Feeding
The Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish is primarily an invertivore. In nature it feeds on a wide variety of small animal prey, including polychaete worm tentacles, hydroids, small crustaceans, fish eggs, and parts of echinoderms such as sea urchins.
In captivity, offer mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped shrimp, clam, mussel, krill, copepod-based foods, and quality frozen marine carnivore blends. Foods can occasionally be placed into rock crevices to encourage the species' natural probing behavior.
Newly introduced specimens may be reluctant to accept prepared foods immediately. Clam or mussel on the shell, frozen mysis, and finely chopped marine seafood can be particularly useful during acclimation.
Feed two to three smaller meals per day when practical, especially while the fish is establishing itself and maintaining body condition.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish is generally peaceful toward unrelated marine fish and can be housed with many appropriately sized community species. Suitable tankmates include tangs, rabbitfish, peaceful wrasses, clownfish, gobies, cardinalfish, and compatible angelfish.
Adults commonly occur in pairs in nature, and established compatible pairs may be maintained in sufficiently spacious aquariums. Keeping a single specimen is generally simpler unless a confirmed pair is available.
Use caution when housing it with similar butterflyfish or closely related Forcipiger species, as territorial disputes can occur. Highly aggressive or excessively competitive feeders should also be avoided because they may prevent a newly acclimating butterflyfish from obtaining sufficient food.
Reef Compatibility
The Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish is reef safe with caution. Unlike many butterflyfish, coral polyps are not the primary focus of its natural diet, and some individuals coexist successfully with corals. However, reef compatibility cannot be guaranteed.
Feather duster worms, tubeworms, small crustaceans, hydroids, sea urchin tube feet, and other exposed invertebrates may be picked at or consumed. Individual specimens may also investigate certain corals or other sessile organisms.
It is best suited to reef aquariums where the aquarist accepts some risk to ornamental invertebrates. A fish-only-with-live-rock system remains the most predictable option.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Stable salinity, excellent oxygenation, and consistently clean water are more important than maintaining an exact value within these ranges.
Common Considerations
-
Specialized feeding behavior: Its long snout is adapted for extracting small invertebrates from narrow reef crevices.
-
Feeding acclimation: Newly introduced specimens may initially require enticing frozen or fresh marine foods before accepting a broader captive diet.
-
Reef safe with caution: Tubeworms, small crustaceans, echinoderms, and other exposed invertebrates may be targeted.
-
Adult swimming space: Adults can reach approximately 8.5 inches and require substantial horizontal swimming room.
-
Avoid aggressive food competition: Fast or highly aggressive feeders can make it difficult for a newly introduced specimen to maintain adequate nutrition.
