The Yellow-Banded Possum Wrasse (Wetmorella nigropinnata) is a captivating, peaceful saltwater fish prized for its distinctive markings, small size, and fascinating behavior. Featuring a reddish-brown to deep rust-colored body accented by two striking yellow vertical bands, this elegant wrasse also displays a pointed snout, expressive eyes, and dark eyespots on its fins. Its subtle coloration and unusual appearance make it a beautiful addition to established reef aquariums.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, including Indonesia, the Philippines, the Red Sea, and surrounding tropical reef systems, this species naturally inhabits coral-rich environments filled with caves, crevices, and sheltered rockwork. Unlike many larger, more active wrasses, the Yellow-Banded Possum Wrasse moves deliberately through its surroundings, carefully exploring the rockwork in search of tiny crustaceans and other natural prey.
With a maximum adult size of approximately 3 inches and a gentle temperament, this marine aquarium fish is especially appealing for peaceful reef aquariums and appropriately maintained fish-only systems. Its secretive yet curious personality provides a unique viewing experience, particularly once it becomes comfortable with its environment.

Tank Requirements
The Yellow-Banded Possum Wrasse thrives in a mature, stable saltwater aquarium with abundant live rock, caves, overhangs, and narrow crevices. These sheltered areas provide security and encourage the fish to display its natural exploratory behavior.
A minimum 30-gallon aquarium is recommended, with larger systems offering additional habitat and greater flexibility when selecting compatible tankmates. A well-established aquarium with healthy populations of copepods and amphipods is especially beneficial, as the wrasse naturally hunts small organisms throughout the day.
Moderate, indirect water movement is ideal, along with quieter areas where the fish can comfortably rest and forage. Unlike sand-burying wrasses, this species typically retreats into rockwork for protection and does not require a deep sand bed.
A tight-fitting aquarium lid is essential, as possum wrasses can jump when startled or frightened.
Diet and Feeding
The Yellow-Banded Possum Wrasse is a carnivore that naturally feeds on small benthic invertebrates, including tiny crustaceans and other organisms living within reef structures.
In captivity, provide a varied diet of appropriately sized marine-based foods, including:
-
Frozen mysis shrimp and finely chopped mysis
-
Vitamin-enriched brine shrimp
-
Copepods and other small live crustaceans
-
Finely chopped shrimp, clam, and other marine seafood
-
High-quality frozen carnivore blends
-
Small marine pellets once accepted
Offer small portions two to three times daily, particularly during the initial acclimation period. Newly introduced specimens may be hesitant to eat prepared foods, making live copepods or other suitable live foods helpful for encouraging a feeding response.
A mature aquarium with established microfauna provides valuable supplemental nutrition but should not replace regular feeding.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Yellow-Banded Possum Wrasse is exceptionally peaceful and somewhat shy, making it an excellent choice for aquariums featuring other gentle marine fish.
Suitable tankmates include peaceful gobies, small blennies, firefish, assessors, and other non-aggressive reef inhabitants. It may also coexist with compatible clownfish and similarly sized community fish that do not compete aggressively for food or territory.
Avoid housing this species with large, aggressive wrasses, territorial dottybacks, aggressive damselfish, or predatory fish that may intimidate or consume it.
This species is generally best maintained individually. Keeping multiple possum wrasses may be possible in spacious, carefully planned systems, but aggression can occur between similar-looking individuals, especially in confined aquariums.
When first introduced, the wrasse may remain hidden for several days while adjusting to its surroundings. Once established, it typically becomes more comfortable venturing out to investigate the aquarium.
Reef Compatibility
The Yellow-Banded Possum Wrasse is reef safe with caution and is widely considered suitable for established coral reef aquariums.
It generally leaves healthy SPS corals, LPS corals, soft corals, and other sessile reef organisms undisturbed. Its small size and peaceful nature make it particularly attractive for coral-focused aquariums.
However, because this species naturally hunts tiny invertebrates, it may consume copepods, amphipods, small worms, and other beneficial microfauna. Very small ornamental crustaceans or newly hatched shrimp may also be at risk.
Larger established ornamental shrimp, snails, hermit crabs, and other typical reef cleanup crew members are generally compatible.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026 pH: 8.1–8.4 Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Stable water conditions are essential for long-term health. Avoid sudden changes in salinity, temperature, or water chemistry, particularly during acclimation. A mature aquarium with consistent parameters will provide the most suitable environment.
Common Considerations
-
Shy During Acclimation: Newly introduced individuals often hide extensively before becoming comfortable. Plenty of sheltered rockwork and peaceful surroundings help reduce stress.
-
Jumping Risk: A secure, tight-fitting lid is strongly recommended, as this species may jump when startled.
-
Feeding Requirements: Some individuals initially refuse pellets or frozen foods. Small live foods and frequent feedings can encourage successful acclimation.
-
Peaceful Tankmates: Aggressive or overly active fish may prevent this timid wrasse from feeding properly, causing it to remain hidden.
-
Established Aquarium Preferred: Mature live rock with natural microfauna supports its continuous foraging behavior and helps provide supplemental nutrition.
The Yellow-Banded Possum Wrasse is an excellent addition for aquarists seeking a small, peaceful, and visually distinctive marine fish. With its unique body shape, delicate yellow markings, and engaging rockwork-exploring behavior, it brings understated beauty and natural character to a well-established saltwater reef aquarium.
