Stylocoeniella spp.- Care Level
- Shop live corals by care level: Moderate–Difficult Care Level Moderate–Difficult Sensitive to parameter swings. Best for experienced reefers with a mature tank. Ideal water parametersTemp76–80°FSalinity1.025–1.026pH8.1–8.4Alkalinity7–9 dKHCalcium400–450 ppmMagnesium1280–1350 ppm
- Flow
- Shop live corals by flow: High Flow High Strong, turbulent flow that keeps the coral clean and well oxygenated.
- Lighting
- Shop live corals by lighting: High Lighting High High light, roughly 250–400+ PAR. Upper rockwork; acclimate gradually to avoid bleaching.
- Placement
- Shop live corals by placement: High Placement High Upper rockwork, closest to the light. Move it up in steps after acclimating.
- Growth Rate
- Shop live corals by growth rate: Slow–Moderate Growth Rate Slow–Moderate Grows at a slow to moderate pace and holds its size and shape well. A good fit for smaller tanks.
- Temperament
- Peaceful(2–3 inches spacing) Temperament Peaceful Doesn't sting its neighbors, so it can sit closer to other corals.
- Feeding
- Photosynthetic(primary), microplankton, rotifers, copepod nauplii, oyster eggs, coral-specific powdered foods (e.g., Reef Roids), amino acid supplements, broadcast phytoplankton Feeding Photosynthetic Gets most of its energy from light through the algae living in its tissue. Occasional target feeding can boost growth and color.
Aquacultured Stylocoeniella Coral
Stylocoeniella is a small polyp stony (SPS) coral in the family Astrocoeniidae that grows mainly as an encrusting coral, spreading across rock in thin sheets, low bumps, or small nodules. Stylocoeniella coral has tiny, closely packed corallites, often with a small upright spine between them, which gives the surface a finely textured look. Species such as Stylocoeniella armata and Stylocoeniella guentheri occur across the Indo-Pacific, often in shaded or sheltered spots on the reef.
Stylocoeniella is a good choice for reefers who enjoy colorful, low-profile encrusting corals that fill in rockwork over time. Our Stylocoeniella are aquacultured in Florida.

Water Chemistry for Stylocoeniella
As a stony coral, Stylocoeniella uses calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium to lay down new skeleton as it encrusts. Stable levels matter more than hitting exact numbers, so test regularly and correct in small steps.
Lighting
T5 fluorescents, metal halides, and LEDs can all grow Stylocoeniella when they provide proper light intensity. We recommend a 14–20K color spectrum for the best coloration. Because many Stylocoeniella grow in shaded areas in the wild, start a new frag in a moderate spot and increase intensity gradually while watching its color.
Water Flow
Moderate to high flow keeps detritus from settling on the low, encrusting surface, where trapped debris can irritate tissue. Varied flow that sweeps across the colony works better than a single direct stream.
Placement
Mount your new coral using IC gel glue, putty, or a combination of both. Place it on a rock or ledge that receives direct lighting and ample flow. Setting the plug flush against the rock lets the colony encrust onto the rockwork as it grows. Keep it clear of faster-growing or aggressive neighbors that could shade, sting, or overgrow it.
What We Feed Our Stylocoeniella
Stylocoeniella gets much of its energy from photosynthesis, but supplemental feeding supports growth and color. We recommend feeding hard corals a combination of zooplankton, phytoplankton, amino acids, and other organic proteins. A daily broadcast feeding while your return and circulation pumps are stopped gives corals the chance to capture the nutrients they need. Our recommended feeds:
Coloration and Settling In
Stylocoeniella color depends on lighting, nutrition, and water stability. Encrusting corals often spend their first weeks attaching to the plug or rock before visible spreading begins, so patience and stable conditions pay off.
Common Stylocoeniella Challenges
- Overgrowth: algae or faster-growing corals can cover a low encrusting colony
- Stings from neighbors: keep it clear of corals with sweeper tentacles
- Detritus buildup: low flow lets debris settle on the tissue
- Bleaching: caused by sudden increases in light or temperature; acclimate gradually
How We Grow Our Stylocoeniella
Our Stylocoeniella frags are aquacultured in Florida. Corals grown in our aquaculture facility are lit by EcoTech Marine Radion XR30s and powered by a mix of EcoTech Marine Vortech pumps and Sicce wavemakers.
How to Acclimate a Stylocoeniella Frag
- Temperature: float the sealed bag in your aquarium to equalize temperature.
- Water: slowly add your tank water to the bag so the coral can adjust to your parameters.
- Mounting: attach the frag with IC gel glue, putty, or both, flush against the rock.
- Lighting: start in a moderate spot and adjust gradually over a few weeks.
