Aquacultured Torch Coral

Torch corals (Euphyllia glabrescens) are large polyp stony (LPS) corals prized for their long, flowing tentacles and colors that range from greens and golds to purples and blues. Relatively easy to care for and adaptable to a variety of tank conditions, a torch coral works for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. Our torch coral for sale is propagated in our dedicated aquaculture facility, so it arrives already adapted to captive systems.

In the wild, torch corals are found throughout the Indo-Pacific, including Indonesia, Fiji, and the Great Barrier Reef. They live in lagoonal and reef slope environments where water flow is moderate and light is diffused. Like other Euphyllia, torches can extend sweeper tentacles that sting nearby corals, so plan for open space around each colony.

Water Chemistry for Torch Corals

Torch corals tolerate slight swings in water chemistry better than many SPS corals, but stable parameters are still crucial for long-term success. Consistency helps you avoid stress and keep colors vibrant, so test regularly and dose to hold calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium steady.

Lighting Your Torch Coral

Torches thrive under moderate to high light in the 100–200 PAR range and grow well under LEDs, T5 fluorescents, or metal halides. We use a combination of EcoTech Marine Radions and metal halides in our facility. When introducing a new frag, start at lower intensity and increase it slowly over 2–3 weeks to prevent stress or bleaching.

Water Flow

Moderate, indirect flow keeps the tentacles swaying gently while bringing nutrients to the coral and removing waste. Avoid strong, direct flow, which can damage the delicate polyps and cause retraction; aim for the constant but gentle motion of a natural reef lagoon. Our systems run EcoTech Marine MP pumps, Reef Octopus OCTO Pulse, and Sicce XStream wavemakers.

What We Feed Our Torch Corals

Torch corals rely on their symbiotic zooxanthellae for energy, but supplemental feeding improves growth and coloration. We feed our Royal Flush fine-particle blend (Tisochrysis, Rhodomonas, and Tetraselmis). Torches also accept meatier foods such as mysis shrimp and other small, protein-rich offerings; target-feeding these a few times a month supports color and faster growth. Use a turkey baster to feed gently, and pause water flow for about 10–15 minutes so the coral can capture and digest the food.

Coloration and Settling In

Torch coral color is shaped by lighting spectrum, water quality, and feeding. Deeper blue lighting enhances vivid colors, while balanced lighting supports steady growth. Nutrient-rich foods such as mysis shrimp and amino acids contribute to rich pigmentation, and proper levels of trace elements like iron and iodine help maintain it. Torches adapt relatively quickly to new systems when parameters are stable.

Common Torch Coral Challenges

  • Brown jelly disease: a bacterial infection that appears as brown, jelly-like material on the coral; remove affected tissue promptly and improve tank conditions
  • Polyp bailout: unstable water, excessive flow, or nutrient imbalances can cause polyps to detach from the skeleton; keep parameters consistent and flow gentle
  • Tissue retraction: too much flow or poor placement causes polyps to pull in; provide gentle, indirect flow
  • Water quality sensitivity: high nitrate or phosphate can lead to tissue recession or dull color; test regularly and perform water changes
  • Lighting stress: inconsistent lighting or sudden jumps in intensity can cause bleaching or tissue loss
  • Stinging neighbors: sweeper tentacles can damage nearby corals; leave room around the colony

How We Farm Our Torch Coral Frags

We select healthy parent colonies and frag them with precision to minimize stress. Each frag is mounted securely with reef-safe glue or epoxy and placed in grow-out tanks, where we monitor growth and coloration closely under Radion and metal halide lighting with randomized flow. This controlled process produces aquacultured torch corals suited to home aquariums and supports sustainability in the hobby.

How to Acclimate a Torch Coral Frag

Good torch coral care starts on day one, since shipping and new conditions can stress the coral.

  1. Temperature: float the bag in your aquarium for 15–20 minutes to equalize temperature.
  2. Drip acclimation: gradually introduce your tank water to the coral.
  3. Lighting: place the coral in a lower-light area or reduce intensity, then increase lighting over 2–3 weeks to avoid bleaching.
  4. Placement: mount the frag with glue or epoxy on a rock or ledge with moderate, indirect flow, and monitor its behavior and color while it adjusts.
FAQs Common questions about TSA Blowtorch Torch Coral

My Torch Coral’s tentacles look thin and whip-like—flow or lighting issue?

Torches prefer moderate to strong, indirect, alternating flow. Laminar jets can stretch tentacles thin, cause tissue irritation, and expose skeleton; too little flow traps detritus and invites bacterial issues. Aim for a pulsing pattern across the colony, not directly at it. Provide PAR around 150–250 with acclimation; sudden light jumps can cause tip burn or retraction.

Why did my “gold” Torch fade or brown despite stable parameters?

Color shifts often track spectrum, PAR, and nutrients. Golds tend to wash out under very high PAR or overly blue-heavy light without balanced white. Keep PAR 150–250, nitrate 5–15 ppm, phosphate 0.03–0.1 ppm, and avoid ULNS starvation. Trace elements (iodine, manganese) via regular water changes help pigment expression; abrupt changes trigger paling or browning.

How far can Torch sweepers reach, and how should I position it?

Night sweepers regularly extend 6–10 inches and can sting most LPS, zoas, and even some SPS. Place the coral “downstream” so flow carries tentacles away from prized neighbors. Provide at least 8–12 inches of clearance in the direction of flow. Running carbon and maintaining good skimming helps mitigate allelopathic stress in mixed reefs.

What’s the fastest way to respond to brown jelly on a Torch head?

Immediately siphon the jelly, remove the colony, and frag off any unaffected heads well into clean skeleton. Dip the healthy pieces in iodine (or low-dose peroxide) and increase random flow. Stabilize temperature, salinity, and alkalinity to reduce stress; consider a UV sterilizer to curb planktonic bacteria. Discard infected tissue; don’t return it to the tank.
