FAQs Answers to the most common questions.
What minimum aquarium size should I plan for?
Plan on a 120-gallon aquarium as the minimum for an adult, and treat larger volumes as better, since some authorities recommend 158 to 180 gallons or more.
Is the Singapore Angelfish safe for a coral reef aquarium?
Only with caution. It may nip soft and stony corals, especially large-polyp stony corals and zoanthids, along with clam mantles and tubeworms, and it may also pick at mobile invertebrates including ornamental shrimp and crabs.
How can a newly purchased specimen be encouraged to eat?
Place it in a quiet, mature aquarium with non-aggressive tankmates, numerous hiding places, and algae-bearing rock, then offer varied sponge-based, meaty, and algae-rich foods several times daily. Fresh Caulerpa often tempts a fish that has refused food for its first days.
All listed sizes are approximate, not guaranteed, and may vary slightly.
The Singapore Angelfish (Chaetodontoplus mesoleucus), also known as the Vermiculated Angelfish, is an elegant marine angelfish with an unmistakable combination of yellow, white, black, and blue. A bright yellow snout and blue lips are followed by a bold black band through the eye, while the body transitions from pale cream to dark purplish-gray covered in fine, wavy vermiculated markings. Brilliant blue edging along the dorsal and anal fins completes its refined appearance.
Native to the Indo-West Pacific, the species occurs from Sri Lanka through Southeast Asia to southern Japan and Papua New Guinea, with populations also found around northwestern Australia. It inhabits protected continental shelf reefs, lagoons, and coral-rich areas, often remaining close to reef structure where it can quickly retreat among corals and rockwork.
Reaching approximately 7 inches as an adult, the Singapore Angelfish makes an impressive addition to a mature fish-only aquarium or carefully planned reef aquarium. It can be somewhat shy and reluctant to feed when first introduced, so established live rock, peaceful surroundings, and careful acclimation are particularly important. Once settled, its distinctive coloration and deliberate swimming behavior make it a rewarding centerpiece marine aquarium fish.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Moderate
Minimum Tank Size: 120 gallons
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Omnivore
Reef Safe: With Caution
Region: Indo-West Pacific – Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia to southern Japan and Papua New Guinea, including northwestern Australia
Scientific Name: Chaetodontoplus mesoleucus
Tank Requirements
A mature aquarium of at least 120 gallons is recommended for the Singapore Angelfish. Adults reach approximately 7 inches, and the aquarium should provide enough territory for comfortable swimming while offering extensive rockwork for shelter and grazing.
Arrange established live rock into caves, overhangs, cracks, and sheltered passages. This species can be cautious when first introduced and should have several secure retreats where it can avoid activity and more assertive tankmates. Open swimming areas should be maintained around the rockwork rather than creating an overly crowded aquascape.
Established live rock is especially valuable because it supports natural algae and other grazing opportunities. Moderate water movement, excellent oxygenation, efficient biological filtration, and consistent water quality are recommended.
A quieter aquarium environment can be beneficial during acclimation. Newly introduced specimens that are continually chased or exposed without adequate cover may remain hidden and can be difficult to establish on prepared foods.
Diet and Feeding
The Singapore Angelfish is an omnivore that naturally feeds on sponges, tunicates, filamentous algae, and other reef-associated material. A diverse captive diet is important, particularly because some specimens may initially be reluctant to accept prepared foods.
Offer marine angelfish preparations containing sponge material, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped shrimp and clam, quality frozen marine blends, Spirulina-based foods, marine algae, and appropriately sized pellets once accepted.
Established live rock provides valuable grazing opportunities between meals and can be particularly helpful during the acclimation period. For a hesitant feeder, offering several different frozen and fresh marine foods may help encourage a stronger feeding response.
Feed two to three smaller meals per day when practical. Closely monitor newly introduced specimens to confirm they are actively eating rather than relying solely on occasional grazing from the rockwork.
Temperament and Tankmates
The Singapore Angelfish is generally shy during initial acclimation but may become territorial once established. Its overall temperament is best considered semi-aggressive.
Choose peaceful to moderately assertive tankmates that will not continually chase the angelfish or prevent it from reaching food. Compatible tankmates can include tangs, wrasses, rabbitfish, larger clownfish, and other appropriately sized community marine fish.
Use caution when combining it with other angelfish, particularly similarly shaped Chaetodontoplus species. Territorial aggression may develop as individuals establish preferred areas of the aquarium.
Keeping a single Singapore Angelfish is the most straightforward approach for most home aquariums. The species forms small groups in nature, but maintaining multiple specimens successfully in captivity requires substantially more space and careful management of aggression.
Reef Compatibility
The Singapore Angelfish is reef safe with caution.
Its natural diet includes sponges and tunicates, and captive individuals may also nip at soft corals, stony coral polyps, clam mantles, and other sessile invertebrates. Some specimens may coexist successfully with selected corals, while others develop persistent grazing behavior.
Ornamental shrimp, crabs, and snails are generally at lower risk than corals, clams, sponges, and other attached invertebrates, although individual behavior can vary.
For aquarists maintaining valuable coral colonies or clams, the possibility of nipping should be considered before introducing this species.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Maintain stable, well-oxygenated seawater and avoid rapid changes in temperature, salinity, pH, or alkalinity. Consistent water quality is more important than attempting to maintain one exact value within these ranges.
Common Considerations
-
Acclimation can be challenging: Some specimens initially hide or refuse prepared foods and should be monitored closely until feeding consistently.
-
Mature live rock is important: Established rockwork provides shelter, grazing surfaces, and access to naturally occurring foods.
-
Reef safe with caution: Corals, clam mantles, sponges, tunicates, and other sessile invertebrates may be nipped.
-
Territorial once established: Use caution with other angelfish and similarly shaped species.
-
Adult size and swimming room: At approximately 7 inches as an adult, this species requires a spacious aquarium despite its relatively compact appearance.
