The Male Scott's Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus scottorum) is a stunning saltwater aquarium fish celebrated for its brilliant coloration, impressive size, and dynamic personality. Adult males display an extraordinary combination of emerald green, turquoise, electric blue, deep red, and contrasting dark fin markings. Coloration varies significantly depending on geographic origin, with males from Australia, Fiji, and the Cook Islands exhibiting distinctive regional patterns. During courtship and territorial displays, males can intensify their coloration and spread their fins, creating a spectacular display in the aquarium.
Native to the tropical Pacific Ocean, Scott's Fairy Wrasse inhabits coral-rich reef slopes, lagoons, and outer reef environments where it swims actively above rockwork in search of planktonic prey. Its streamlined body, elegant fins, and constant movement make it a particularly attractive centerpiece for larger reef aquariums.
Reaching approximately 5–6 inches as an adult, the male Scott's Fairy Wrasse is best suited for spacious, established marine aquariums. Although considered reef safe, mature males can be considerably more territorial than many other fairy wrasse species. With appropriate tankmates and sufficient swimming space, this spectacular marine fish brings vibrant color, energetic activity, and an impressive presence to reef and fish-only aquariums.
Quick Care Guide
Care Level: Easy to Moderate Minimum Tank Size: 90 Gallons Temperament: Semi-aggressive Diet: Carnivore / Planktivore Reef Safe: Yes Region: Pacific Ocean, Australia, Fiji, Cook Islands, French Polynesia Scientific Name:Cirrhilabrus scottorum
Tank Requirements
The Male Scott's Fairy Wrasse requires a spacious, mature saltwater aquarium with plenty of open swimming space and substantial live rock structures. Unlike more secretive wrasses, adult males are active, confident swimmers that frequently patrol the middle and upper portions of the aquarium.
A minimum 90-gallon aquarium is recommended, although larger systems are strongly preferred when housing other fairy wrasses or multiple active fish. The aquarium should include caves, overhangs, and sheltered rockwork where the wrasse can retreat when stressed or during nighttime rest.
Like other fairy wrasses, this species does not bury itself in the sand. Instead, it sleeps within the rockwork, often forming a protective mucus cocoon. A deep sand bed is therefore unnecessary.
Moderate water movement with good oxygenation is ideal, along with unobstructed areas for swimming and displaying.
A tight-fitting aquarium lid is absolutely essential, as male Scott's Fairy Wrasses are powerful jumpers, particularly when startled or involved in territorial disputes.
Diet and Feeding
The Male Scott's Fairy Wrasse is a carnivorous planktivore that naturally feeds on small crustaceans, zooplankton, and other tiny organisms drifting through the water column.
In captivity, it typically accepts a variety of high-quality marine foods, including:
-
Frozen mysis shrimp
-
Vitamin-enriched brine shrimp
-
Frozen copepods and marine zooplankton
-
Finely chopped shrimp, clam, and other marine seafood
-
High-quality frozen carnivore preparations
-
Protein-rich marine pellets and flakes
Feed two to three small meals daily to maintain healthy body condition and support its active metabolism.
A varied diet rich in marine proteins helps promote strong coloration, healthy fin development, and overall vitality. Newly introduced males may initially be hesitant to eat, so frozen mysis or other familiar marine foods can help stimulate feeding during acclimation.
Temperament and Tankmates
Male Scott's Fairy Wrasses are generally compatible with a variety of appropriately sized community fish, but they are known for being more assertive and territorial than many other members of the Cirrhilabrus genus.
Mature males may aggressively chase other fairy wrasses, especially similarly colored males or species that occupy overlapping swimming territories. This behavior can be particularly noticeable in smaller aquariums or when a dominant male has already established control of the aquarium.
Suitable tankmates include clownfish, tangs, peaceful to moderately assertive angelfish, larger gobies, blennies, and other community marine fish capable of coexisting with an active wrasse.
Keeping a single male is generally recommended for the most predictable compatibility. Maintaining multiple males in the same aquarium presents a substantial risk of territorial aggression.
In very large, carefully planned systems, a male may be maintained with compatible females, but social interactions should be monitored closely. When introducing this species to an aquarium containing other fairy wrasses, an acclimation box can help assess aggression before release.
Avoid housing mature males with particularly timid fairy wrasses, very small passive species, or aggressive predators.
Reef Compatibility
The Male Scott's Fairy Wrasse is considered reef safe and is an excellent choice for larger coral reef aquariums.
It does not normally nip at or consume SPS corals, LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids, mushroom corals, or other healthy coral colonies. It is also generally compatible with established ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, and other typical reef invertebrates.
As a planktivorous wrasse, it focuses primarily on small food items suspended in the water column rather than actively hunting larger bottom-dwelling invertebrates. Very small planktonic crustaceans and larvae may be consumed as part of its natural feeding behavior.
Its vibrant coloration and active swimming style make it a beautiful addition to coral-dominated displays without the coral-predation concerns associated with some larger wrasse species.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026 pH: 8.1–8.4 Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Stable water conditions are essential for maintaining the health and coloration of this species. Avoid rapid changes in salinity, temperature, and pH, particularly during acclimation.
A mature biological filtration system, consistent maintenance, and well-oxygenated water help provide an optimal long-term environment.
Common Considerations
-
Male Territorial Behavior: Mature males can be among the more aggressive fairy wrasses, particularly toward other Cirrhilabrus species. A single male is recommended unless the aquarium is specifically designed for multiple wrasses.
-
Jumping Risk: A secure, tight-fitting lid is mandatory. Startling events, sudden lighting changes, and territorial encounters can trigger jumping.
-
Coloration and Regional Variations: Males from different Pacific locations display distinct color patterns. Color intensity may fluctuate with social interactions, mood, lighting, and aquarium conditions. Some males may gradually lose color intensity without suitable social stimulation.
-
Acclimation Sensitivity: Newly introduced males may hide or refuse food temporarily. Provide peaceful surroundings, multiple hiding places, and appropriate marine-based foods to encourage adjustment.
-
Adult Size and Swimming Requirements: Growing to approximately 5–6 inches, this active wrasse benefits from generous horizontal swimming space and carefully selected tankmates.
The Male Scott's Fairy Wrasse is an outstanding choice for experienced reef enthusiasts and aquarists seeking a brilliantly colored, active centerpiece fish. Its vibrant blue-green coloration, impressive male displays, and excellent coral compatibility make it a remarkable addition to spacious saltwater aquariums. With proper nutrition, carefully managed tankmates, and a secure environment, this magnificent fairy wrasse can become one of the most visually striking inhabitants of a marine aquarium.
